With the emergence of the "Armor-Bugs"—mutated insectoid monsters capable of repelling all modern weaponry—humanity had lost much of its living territory.
The only ones capable of fighting these Armor-Bugs are girls who harbor "insects" that have undergone a different evolution: the "Butterfly Empresses."
Ayumi Odagiri, one of these Butterfly Empress candidates, struggled with the reality of her inability to become a Butterfly Empress.
Her best friend, who was supposed to be by her side, abandoned her, and the person she admired paid her no mind whatsoever.
These desperate days reached their climax when she was brought to the brink of death in a battle against the Armor-Bugs.

With death looming, the girl transformed her body into a butterfly. And her flapping wings brought about a transformation in the world.
This is the story of girls who, though at the mercy of fate, strive to survive in a cruel world.
