The story begins in a quiet farming village on the outskirts of the Kingdom of Rincan, where a young man named Tino lives a solitary life. Tino, with his uncommon black hair and eyes, is a middle-aged villager. He lives alone, having lost his father to illness at the age of twelve. His days are spent farming, and his evenings are dedicated to preparing meals and tending to his self-made bath, a luxury not common in his world.
On his 25th birthday, Tino decides to check his status card. In this world, magic and monsters exist, and each person has a status that can be checked via a skill or a government-issued card. Unique skills are rare and their acquisition methods are unknown. Tino's status reveals a surprising special skill: "Immortality." This discovery leaves him bewildered.
Five years pass, and Tino continues his peaceful life, though he begins to notice the aging of his peers. He realizes that his unchanging appearance, due to his immortality, will eventually draw suspicion. He decides to leave his village to explore the world and pursue his love for books, which he had to abandon after his father's death. After informing the village chief, Tino departs with his father's keepsake dagger.
His journey leads him to Naihos Town. Along the way, he encounters and defeats two slimes, collecting their magic stones. Upon arriving in Naihos, he heads to the Adventurer's Guild to sell the magic stones. He learns that unregistered individuals receive less for their goods, but he avoids registering to conceal his immortality. He earns a meager 600 lira, which he uses to secure lodging and work odd jobs.
Tino's primary goal is to acquire a magic ring, a magical item that can store large quantities of items. He desires this to store the books he wishes to read. After a week of labor, he still falls short of the cheapest magic ring. He decides to hunt more monsters, despite the inherent danger, and manages to acquire enough magic stones to purchase the ring and level up to Level 2.
A year later, Tino has settled into a routine of taking odd jobs or hunting weak monsters to fund his purchases of books and his modest lifestyle. He has learned basic fire and water magic, though their power is limited. His title changes from "Villager" to "Vagrant."
Ten years pass in Naihos Town. Tino, having made a few acquaintances, decides to move on. He has learned to cast all elements of magic, though not at a combat-ready level, and his status has risen to Level 16. He moves to Daishin Town, where he continues his quiet life for another decade, encountering goblins for the first time and noting his slower leveling rate compared to adventurers. He then decides to visit Bowshika, the capital city.
In Bowshika, Tino is impressed by the city's vibrancy and the vast selection of books, including advanced magic texts. However, he is saving money for a new, larger magic ring as his current one is nearing its storage capacity. After ten years in the capital, he has visited all the towns in the Kingdom of Rincan. He decides to return to his original village, Todai Village, with his son, Carlo.
Upon returning to Todai Village, Tino, now Level 107, introduces himself as a traveler seeking his ancestors' graves, intending to bury his late wife, Laura, there. He is offered his old, now vacant, home to stay in. He visits his parents' grave, where he uses earth magic to repair the gravestone and buries Laura's remains. He reflects on his parents' past as adventurers and his father's true motivation for settling in the village.
Six years prior, in the town of Doki, Tino met Laura while she was gathering herbs. He saved her from a Rank B wolf, a rare occurrence in that area. Laura, who helped her grandmother at a pharmacy, fell in love with Tino. After her grandmother, Luna, passed away, Tino found Laura in a weakened state from grief and took her in. He proposed to her, and they married. Tino kept his immortality a secret, knowing Laura would age and eventually pass away.
Laura became pregnant, and their son, Carlo, was born in Jisoku Town. Despite Tino's efforts and knowledge of healing magic, Laura's health declined. She passed away a year after Carlo's birth, entrusting Carlo to Tino. Tino buried Laura's ashes in his parents' grave in Daitou Village. He then spent three years in Jisoku Town raising Carlo before deciding to travel to Daitou Village with his son.
