The protagonist, Harukaze Reito, a highly accomplished SSS-rank adventurer known as "Zero," plans to propose to his girlfriend of many years, Kaori, at a high-end restaurant. He has meticulously prepared for this moment, having worked diligently as an adventurer since high school to secure a stable future, accumulating significant wealth and even investing in real estate. However, upon arriving at the restaurant, Kaori reveals her true intentions. She confesses that she has been seeing another man, Katsuoki, an elite Guild staff member who is older and has a more promising career. Kaori breaks up with Reito, citing his unstable adventurer profession and lack of perceived future prospects. Katsuoki, wielding his authority as a Guild staff member, then proceeds to revoke Reito's adventurer license, effectively ending his career.
Devastated but surprisingly composed, Reito accepts the situation, even ordering drinks for the restaurant staff to celebrate his "freedom" from his relationship and career. The next day, the Adventurer's Guild is thrown into chaos by the sudden and unexplained retirement of SSS-rank adventurer Zero. The Guild Master and Sub-master, Kanzaki Shiori, are baffled, as Zero had not officially requested retirement and his adventurer registration was erased without proper procedure. The dissolution of Zero's top-ranked clan, "Twilight Tea Party," further exacerbates the situation, as its members are left without a leader and must disband.
Meanwhile, the former members of Twilight Tea Party gather to discuss their future. They learn that Zero's retirement is likely due to his decision to quit adventuring, not his death. They decide to go their separate ways, with some becoming solo adventurers, others forming new parties, and some establishing new clans. During their discussion, they recall that Reito had mentioned wanting to retire to pursue a proposal, and it's suggested that the leader of a sub-clan, "Starry Sky Restaurant," might know his whereabouts.
Reito, suffering from a hangover, finds himself in a park. He is approached by a young girl named Karen, who is skipping school and asking for food. Karen reveals that her parents have abandoned her due to debt, leaving her with no home or means to continue her education. Seeing a reflection of those who met tragic ends in her desperation, Reito offers to guide her. He takes her to a G-rank dungeon, a low-level dungeon accessible without an adventurer license, to help her gain experience.
At the dungeon's reception, Reito encounters his former classmate, Mizuki Shimizu, who now works as a Guild receptionist. Mizuki, who introduced Kaori to Katsuoki, taunts Reito about his breakup and the revocation of his adventurer license. She maliciously uses her position to blacklist Reito, preventing him from reacquiring his license. However, a higher-ranking Guild official, Saruwatari, intervenes and rectifies Mizuki's actions, allowing Reito and Karen to enter the dungeon.
Inside the dungeon, Reito begins training Karen, teaching her combat basics and the importance of absorbing magic stones for power. He reveals his own immense wealth, earned through adventuring, to counter Karen's doubts about the profession's stability, which were fueled by Mizuki's words. He explains that while adventuring is high-risk, it offers high rewards, and that "stability" can be limiting.
Meanwhile, Kanzaki Shiori continues her investigation into Zero's disappearance, suspecting external interference. Katsuoki, now engaged to Kaori, celebrates his success with his superior, boasting about how he manipulated Kaori's insecurities about Reito's career to win her over. Kaori, also celebrating her engagement with friends, dismisses Reito's past efforts, focusing on Katsuoki's stable government job and lavish dates.
After a successful training session, Reito and Karen leave the dungeon. Reito pays the dungeon tax and then instructs Karen to absorb the magic stones they collected, explaining it's a more efficient way to gain power than selling them. He then takes Karen to a high-end yakiniku restaurant, revealing his substantial wealth and confirming he is not a struggling salaryman as Karen had initially assumed. Karen, overwhelmed by Reito's generosity and the realization of his true status, begins to trust him. She reflects on her dire situation and finds hope in Reito's willingness to mentor her, deciding to stay at his luxurious apartment.
