The protagonist, Yuito Asahina, a high school student, is enjoying a night view of Kiyomizu-dera Temple during a school trip when he inexplicably falls through a spatial distortion. He awakens in a vast, dimly lit hall filled with clocks, where he meets a woman in a white robe who identifies herself as a goddess. She informs him that he died due to a mistake on her part and offers him reincarnation in another world with swords and magic, but without any special abilities or "cheat skills." Disappointed but accepting, Yuito is sent to a serene, garden-like area in the new world.
Upon arrival, Yuito finds himself with a small pouch of unfamiliar currency and wearing medieval-style clothing. He discovers a path leading to a large tree bearing delicious, energizing fruit. Continuing his journey, he encounters a priestess in a sacred area, who, misunderstanding his situation and believing him to be an intruder, teleports him away.
Yuito is then transported to a forest clearing where he accidentally witnesses a naked black-haired girl, Misaki, bathing. He apologizes profusely, and Misaki, initially hostile and armed with a sword, eventually calms down. She discovers Yuito possesses a "Skill: Identification Nullification," which prevents her "Identification" skill from reading his stats. Yuito, feigning memory loss about skills, learns about the world's system of levels and skills. Misaki, an adventurer, invites him to accompany her to the "Adventurer City of Elysium" and proposes they become adventurers together, specifically to take an entrance exam called the "First Trial."
During their journey to Elysium, Yuito learns about the world's mechanics, including how levels increase and how skills function, consuming mental energy rather than magic. Elysium is a large, fortified city. Upon arrival, Misaki parts ways with Yuito, leaving him to find lodging. He secures a cheap room and, needing money, learns from the innkeeper about a job placement office and the Adventurer's Guild.
At the Adventurer's Guild, Yuito encounters Misaki again. She explains that to become an adventurer, they must pass the "First Trial," a dungeon exploration requiring a party of at least two. She invites Yuito to join her, emphasizing that she will handle the dangerous parts and they can share the spoils. Yuito agrees, with the condition that he can withdraw if things become too dangerous. They then prepare for the trial, purchasing a basic iron sword and leather armor for Yuito, and Misaki acquires a "Skill: Search." Yuito also buys a "Scroll: Lesser Gravity Spell" for emergency use.
The "First Trial" involves reaching the deepest part of a Rank 1 "Forest Dungeon" to retrieve "Lilim Flowers." The dungeon is a separate dimension with its own sun. Yuito, despite being Level 1 and having no skills, displays surprisingly adept combat abilities against goblins, impressing Misaki. They progress through the dungeon, encountering and defeating more monsters.
At the second checkpoint, they learn that a "Mutated Species," a "Blood Goblin," has appeared, significantly stronger than regular monsters and causing casualties. The trial is temporarily halted. Misaki, revealing she is Level 30 or higher, decides to hunt the Blood Goblin for its valuable magic stone, despite the extreme danger. Yuito insists on accompanying her, promising to support her from behind with his gravity spell. They inform the examiners of their intention, and Misaki's high level convinces them to allow it.
