The story follows Noah Ignis Essex, a 20-year-old man reincarnated from modern Japan into a fantasy world. He is a calm, conflict-averse individual whose primary motivation is to live a peaceful life. Despite possessing some latent cheat-like abilities, he hasn't fully utilized them, preferring a quiet existence as a guild clerk in the city of Albus. His guardian is Randolph Essex, the Border Count, also known as the Lion King, who views Noah as a son and wishes for him to marry his daughter, Chris.
Noah's daily life at the Adventurer's Guild involves processing requests for adventurers and mercenaries. He distinguishes himself by offering a crucial, often unadvertised, piece of advice to those embarking on dangerous quests, such as suggesting they carry antidotes for potential poison-type monsters. This seemingly small act has led to a reputation for high survival rates among those he sends out, making his counter longer than his colleague's. Noah's unique abilities include being a reincarnator, possessing a max-level "Appraiser" skill that allows him to see numerical stats and potential of individuals, and the ability to see and hear spirits, which he keeps secret to avoid unwanted attention.
His past is revealed through flashbacks. Noah was originally from a wealthy merchant family. His father, also an "Appraiser," was a respected businessman. His mother died of an incurable illness, and his father, desperate to find a cure, was killed by monsters while on a journey. Orphaned at a young age, Noah was taken in by Nigel, a wolf beastman knight who was indebted to his father, and Randolph Essex, the Border Count. He spent seven years under their care, learning and growing, but ultimately declined Randolph's offer of adoption, not wanting to be involved in noble politics or warfare. He chose to work at the guild, finding the structured environment of the Commercial Guild too restrictive.
His work at the guild involves item appraisal, where he uses his skills to assess the value of monster parts and magical items. He is assisted by his juniors: Muss, a bird beastman and his former junior; Eugene, a retired adventurer with a "Danger Sense" skill; and Marie, the daughter of a famous weapon merchant, who is training to prove herself.
A significant encounter occurs when Alphons Bergman, a seemingly B-rank adventurer with a hidden strength, and Sophia Weiss, a blonde elf, arrive at the guild. Alphons, using a false name, is on a mission for the Five Nations. Noah's appraisal of Alphons reveals incredibly high stats and potential, far exceeding his stated rank. They accept a quest to exterminate goblins in Roofus Village.
The next day, Alphons and Sophia return with a massive haul of goblin parts and, surprisingly, the corpse of a formidable Worm, a dragon-type monster. Noah, assisted by his juniors, appraises the items. He notes Alphons's party's exceptional strength and Sophia's keen interest in his abilities, particularly his "Appraiser" skill. During the appraisal, Alphons and Sophia express their satisfaction with the guild's service, contrasting it with a previous negative experience where a guild member attempted to steal rare items.
Later, Eugene is harassed by former party members who abandoned him after he was injured. Noah intervenes, using his authority and subtly hinting at his connection to the influential Border Count Essex to deter them. He demonstrates his power by making the wind swirl around him, a manifestation of his connection to spirits, and warns them about the dangers of monsters they might encounter, effectively driving them away. Alphons and Sophia witness this and express their continued trust in Noah and the guild.
