Description
Susan, a commoner serving as a lady-in-waiting in the royal palace, had a fiancé whose marriage was arranged by their respective families. She had resigned herself to marrying this fiancé, who would either ignore her or only offer sarcastic remarks whenever they met. One day, however, an encounter with a count's daughter, whose engagement to the Second Prince had been annulled, prompted Susan to reflect on her own circumstances.
This is a spin-off featuring Susan, who appeared in "The Crown Prince Broke Off His Engagement with a Duchess, and While I Was Watching It Like It Was Someone Else's Problem, I Unexpectedly Got Dragged Into It Later." This short story can be read as a standalone.
When I saw the theme "Courage" for the "Syosetu Thanks 20th" project, Susan immediately came to mind. Wishing to contribute Susan's courage to this project, I am submitting this as a short story rather than a side story. I hope you enjoy reading it.
