The protagonist, a dedicated player of the MMORPG "Last Legend Online" (LLO), uses a rare item called the "Flute of Reincarnation: Sage" to become a Sage, a powerful but difficult-to-level new class. This action, however, results in his actual death and reincarnation into a new world. He awakens as a baby named Yuuya Drake, the first son of a minor noble family in the countryside. His new parents are Sasha and Rages Drake, and he has an older sister, Celica, and a younger brother, Glen.
Yuuya quickly adapts to his new life, retaining his memories and game knowledge. He discovers that in this world, professions are assigned at birth, and his "Sage" class, considered overpowered in LLO, is viewed as a weak and undesirable profession here. Despite this, Yuuya, now three years old, dedicates himself to studying magic, finding the world's mechanics eerily similar to LLO. He also begins to help with his family's farm, introducing an efficient fertilizer method that significantly boosts their income.
At age five, Yuuya begins sword training with his father, Rages, a skilled Swordsman. Though he loses every spar, Rages encourages him, recognizing Yuuya's exceptional skill in magic, particularly his ability to use the "Shortcuts" skill to chain spells and his self-created "Shortest Path" magic. This skill allows him to evade attacks and launch precise magical assaults, as demonstrated when he easily defeats three bullying boys who attempt to extort them. His sister, Celica, a Paladin, is initially embarrassed by her profession, but Yuuya's prowess in the fight against the bullies instills a sense of pride in her.
As Yuuya grows, his younger brother, Glen, a Berserker, develops a complex about Yuuya's strength despite his "weak" Sage class, leading to frequent challenges. Yuuya consistently defeats Glen, but their father, Rages, encourages both sons, emphasizing that true strength lies not just in profession but in skill and determination.
At fourteen years and eleven months, Yuuya's family faces a crisis when a Black Bear attacks their town's gate. Yuuya and Rages, along with other guards, engage the beast. Yuuya's strategic use of buffing magic and coordinated attacks with his father proves effective, and they defeat the monster. This event, coupled with his desire to explore the world beyond their town, leads Yuuya to decide to leave home upon reaching adulthood.
His family, though initially surprised, supports his decision. Rages provides him with an entrance exam ticket for the Royal Capital's Magic Academy, and his siblings express their support. Yuuya sets off for the capital, encountering bandits on the road. He easily defeats them using his sword skills and magic, confiscating their ill-gotten gains and handing them over to the guards for forced labor. He learns that the bandits were reformed through a rehabilitation program, highlighting the world's emphasis on education and redemption.
Arriving at the Magic Academy, Yuuya accidentally bumps into Lina Briars, a highly regarded candidate for the academy's top student, who is a Paladin. Lina initially dismisses Yuuya as a weak Sage but is surprised by his confidence and skill. Yuuya, in turn, encourages Lina to embrace her Paladin class with pride, drawing parallels to his own journey. He learns the exam structure and secures his admission. The chapters conclude with Yuuya feeling optimistic about his future, having gained wealth, knowledge, and a potential friend before even starting at the academy.
