The story begins with Akizuki Yuiito, a 23-year-old loner and dungeon explorer, venturing alone into a dark cave. His primary motivation is a deep-seated loneliness and a desire for friendship, which his solitary profession as an explorer does not fulfill. He laments his bleak existence, filled with dungeon delving for money and solitary entertainment.
His routine is interrupted by the sounds of a monster attack and screams. Driven by his desire to help and the faint hope of making friends, Yuiito rushes to the scene. He finds a party of four young, highly-ranked "A-class" explorers, known for their popularity and streaming activities, in dire straits against a formidable three-headed dragon. Two of the party members are incapacitated, one is healing, and the remaining fighter is on the verge of collapse. The dragon is unharmed and preparing to unleash a devastating attack. In a single, swift strike, Yuiito decapitates the dragon with his sword, ending the battle instantly.
He then approaches the surviving explorers, attempting to offer assistance, but his social awkwardness and lack of expressive facial muscles make his smile appear as a blank stare. The young man who was fighting, clearly shaken, thanks him. However, the situation escalates when one of the students recognizes Yuiito as an "S-class" explorer. This revelation causes immediate tension, as S-class explorers are widely feared and considered dangerous "abnormalities" due to their extreme power and erratic behavior. Yuiito, despite his own quiet nature, is branded as one of them, further isolating him. Realizing he cannot overcome this stigma and will only frighten them, Yuiito decides to leave, heading to destroy the dungeon core as instructed.
Upon destroying the dungeon core, Yuiito is enveloped in light and finds himself inexplicably back in his old high school room, looking significantly younger. He realizes he has time-traveled back to his past. He ventures out into the city, confirming his temporal displacement through various nostalgic sights. He decides to embrace this second chance at youth and enjoy his school life.
The next day, at the entrance ceremony for Reimei Academy, Yuiito encounters several key individuals. He recognizes the beautiful, strong-willed girl who helped with the truck accident, Amano Hakari, and the popular, seat-stealing student, Jinguuji Kirika. He also learns that the accident he prevented involved a distracted truck driver and a young boy, and that his intervention, cutting the truck in half, became a viral sensation online.
During a mock combat session against the popular A-class explorer Amagai Aouki, Yuiito, intending to lose and avoid repeating past mistakes of being too strong and alienating others, inadvertently reveals his immense power when he deflects Amagai's attack. Amagai, impressed and intrigued, senses a power comparable to an S-class explorer within Yuiito.
Later, Amagai discusses Yuiito with the vice principal, describing him as a student whose strength is immeasurable, evoking the same feeling as encountering an S-class explorer.
The narrative then shifts to Yuiito's awkward social interactions. Hakari approaches him, acknowledging his deliberate loss during the mock combat and introducing herself. Soon after, Kirika and two other male students, Arai Shinya and Asaka Toru, who were also among the survivors of the mock combat, join them. Kirika, surprisingly, deduces that Yuiito's surname has changed and that he was formerly named Kirisaki, hinting at a deeper connection or knowledge about him. Despite his social anxieties, Yuiito finds himself invited to a coffee shop called "Stab" with this group, marking the beginning of his attempt to forge friendships in his second chance at life.
