The protagonist, a self-centered individual who lived prioritizing his own convenience and disregard for others, dies in a traffic accident after shoplifting. He is reincarnated as a male infant in a different world, retaining his memories. Upon birth, he learns he is a prince, but his joy is short-lived. A divine oracle reveals his "Heavenly Vocation" to be a "Farmer" and his "Sub-Vocation" to be a "Thief." This combination is deemed utterly unsuitable for royalty, as it signifies a connection to commoners and criminals, threatening the royal family's prestige. Consequently, the King, his father, orders his immediate disposal, declaring him "nullified" and to be treated as if he never existed.
The infant protagonist, now named Vesner, is taken by his mother, Queen Rieta, who is heartbroken but powerless to defy the King. Vesner, despite his initial cynical acceptance of his fate, develops a nascent affection for his mother and resolves to survive. He devises a plan to "smile" his way into the hearts of his executioners, hoping to be hidden rather than killed.
Meanwhile, Volg, a grupper of mercenaries and adventurers who became knights, is assigned a secret, urgent mission: to take the infant Vesner to a designated location and burn him. Volg and his men, who are aware of the mission's suspicious nature and the King's potential betrayal, decide to defy the order. They realize they will be hunted if they return to the castle. After a tense discussion, they decide to flee to the "Malicious City," a lawless border town known for its criminal element, where they believe they can find a wet nurse and a place to hide.
The narrative then jumps nine years into the future. Vesner, now nine years old, lives in the Malicious City under the protection of Volg, who has become a powerful figure in the city. Vesner, accustomed to the harsh realities of his new home, is well-trained in self-defense and survival. He lives a comfortable, albeit unconventional, life as Volg's adopted son, surrounded by Volg's loyal, rough-around-the-edges subordinates, who treat him like a beloved, albeit spoiled, child. Vesner reflects on his past life and his current situation, acknowledging the "failed reincarnation lottery" but finding contentment in his new life, which offers more freedom than he would have had as a prince. His mother, Queen Rieta, still believes Vesner is alive and is secretly working to find him, using her earth magic abilities to communicate with her father.
