The story begins by introducing the esteemed Aluru family, known for producing excellent knights. The head of the family, Claude, is a magic knight who rose from commoner status through his talent in magic and martial prowess. His wife, Stella, is a saintly figure renowned for her healing abilities. Their son, Lutta, is a delicate, beautiful boy with translucent white hair and large, round red eyes, often mistaken for a girl due to his slight build and small stature.
At the age of five, Lutta regains memories of a past life as a shut-in from Japan who spent his days playing video games. This revelation occurs after he falls from a tree while trying to pick an apple, hitting his head. His older sister, Lilia, a strikingly beautiful girl with white hair and blue eyes, rushes to his aid, crying for help.
Lutta's past life memories flood him, including the concept of video games. He finds the idea of a world where violence is permissible and actions forbidden in his current life are freely indulged in incredibly stimulating and appealing. He becomes consumed by the desire to play games again, lamenting their absence in his current world. He tries to explain his discovery to Lilia, referencing Isaac Newton and the concept of games, but she, along with their parents, dismisses it as a head injury.
Confined to his room with a bandaged head, Lutta grapples with the reality that his world is a game. He is impressed by the graphics and character detail, especially Lilia's sleeping form. However, he realizes his name, Lutta, doesn't appear in the game he remembers, "Ultima Fantasia." He then recalls that Lutta is a character destined to die early in the game, eaten by a monster during a "loss event" in the first chapter, serving to traumatize players. This realization fills him with dread, as his own life is now limited. Determined to survive, Lutta vows to level up and avoid his fated death.
The narrative then shifts to the game's prologue, detailing the "Star Calamity" that heralds the "End of Stars." This cataclysm causes widespread destruction and unleashes monsters. Lutta, who would have turned ten, is a victim, along with the villagers of the protagonist, Allen. Allen is adopted by Claude and, along with Lilia, vows to defeat the Demon King and save the world. Lutta, now six, has just over three years to live.
Despite his impending doom, Lutta continues to train, spending time in the mansion's basement. He tries to explain "leveling up" to Lilia, who remains confused. He eventually convinces her to join him in the basement, where he has been secretly breeding and fighting worms to gain experience. Lilia is horrified by the gruesome scene of Lutta covered in worm goo and the sheer number of worms.
After being discovered by his parents, Lutta is forced to bathe and is lectured by his mother, Stella, while his father, Claude, views his actions as typical boyish mischief. Lutta, still focused on his game knowledge, is disappointed when Claude orders him to stop breeding worms in the mansion. He resolves to find a way to continue his training outside.
Lutta begins studying magic, learning to read magic books and understanding the game's magic system, including elemental affinities. He discovers he has no elemental aptitude, but this doesn't deter him. He attempts to cast a fireball, which backfires spectacularly, causing an explosion and injuring him. His parents and Lilia are concerned, but Lutta, despite his injuries, is more focused on his progress.
Confined to bed for three days, Lutta begins training his magic power by repeatedly casting a simple light spell, "Torch," to drain and recover his mana, gradually increasing his maximum MP. He eventually decides to sneak out of the mansion to visit the "Forgotten Ruins," a tutorial dungeon in the game, to find a key item.
While sneaking out, Lutta, still emitting a faint glow from his "Torch" spell, encounters and easily defeats a Forest Devil, a stronger-than-average early-game monster, using a tree branch. He notes the game's increased realism, as the monster doesn't disappear. He then reaches the dungeon entrance, only to find it occupied by bandits.
The bandits, led by the formidable A-rank bounty, Raverna Grim, are surprised by Lutta's appearance. Lutta, seeing them as experience points, attacks. Raverna, a ruthless leader of the "Shadow Steps" organization, brutally dispatches her own men who failed to stop Lutta. She then confronts Lutta, who, despite his small size, fights with surprising skill and knowledge of her movements.
During the fight, Lutta is aided by a fire spirit named Melca, who was forced to obey Raverna. Melca, traumatized by her past, reluctantly attacks Raverna, who is then defeated by Lutta. Melca, having used all her power to defeat Raverna, fades away, leaving behind a "Flame Spirit Stone." Lutta, disappointed by the loss of experience and items, gives the stone to Lilia, hoping she will be able to use it when she awakens her powers.
Lutta finally reaches the dungeon's depths and obtains the "Astel Link," a device that unlocks the world map and allows for fast travel. He uses a secret command to unlock all travel locations and teleports back to his mansion.
Upon returning, Lutta is found by Lilia and his parents, his injuries evident. He is confined to bed for another week, his training temporarily halted. He reflects on his mistakes and the need to learn healing magic.
Meanwhile, in the dungeon, a shadowy figure from the "Cult of the Black Womb" appears. This cult seeks the "Demon King's Core" and had hired Raverna. The figure, revealed to be a young boy in a black robe, finds Raverna near death and revives her, intending to use her. Raverna, still traumatized by her encounter with Lutta, is further manipulated by the boy, who intends to break her completely.
