The story begins with the protagonist, a shy and introverted high school student, navigating the bustling entrance of Tsukishidai High School. She is acutely aware of her social isolation, feeling like an invisible "air" due to her severe social anxiety. Her only point of focus, and source of anxiety, is Fujiwara Tsukasa, nicknamed "Prince," a popular, handsome, and talented student who, for reasons unknown to her, treats her with coldness. Despite her attempts to greet him, he consistently ignores her, fueling her belief that she must have committed some grave offense.
Meanwhile, Tsukasa is revealed to be deeply infatuated with Fujikawa Ichika, the protagonist. He struggles immensely with even simple greetings, his internal monologues revealing his desperate desire to speak to her and his frustration with his own inability to do so. He admires her quiet demeanor and small stature, finding her endearing. His attempts to rehearse conversations and his internal debates highlight his crippling shyness when it comes to her.
During a special "Traffic Safety" class held in the audiovisual room, the protagonist finds herself seated at the same table as Tsukasa and his friends. Her anxiety is palpable, but a classmate, Tsubaki Kana, unexpectedly defends her when another student criticizes her for dropping her pen near Tsukasa. Tsubaki, a kind and observant student, later questions the protagonist about Tsukasa's coldness, revealing that she herself has inquired about it with him, though his response was evasive. This interaction offers the protagonist a glimmer of hope and a potential ally.
Later, at the protagonist's family's bakery, "Wisteria," Tsukasa unexpectedly visits. The protagonist is flustered by his presence, especially when her childhood friend, Narumi Kaito, jokingly suggests Tsukasa might be her crush. Tsukasa, however, remains indifferent to her, focusing on selecting bread. The protagonist's internal turmoil intensifies as she grapples with his continued coldness and the possibility of his disinterest.
A significant turning point occurs when Kaito, who is revealed to be a cross-dressing enthusiast, decides to go out dressed as a girl. The protagonist is reluctantly drawn into this, and they encounter Tsukasa and his childhood friend, Kusaka Hiroto, a popular and energetic student. Hiroto, mistaking Kaito for a girl, invites them to karaoke. During the karaoke session, the protagonist, pressured by Kaito, sings an old enka song, surprising everyone with her talent. Hiroto, impressed, nicknames her "Uuron-chan" (Oolong-chan) due to her order of oolong tea. He challenges her to a singing contest, which she wins. Hiroto also reveals he knows Kaito is a boy and is amused by the situation. He exchanges contact information with the protagonist, giving her his own and asking for hers, which she reluctantly provides via her old flip phone, earning her the nickname "Garakei" (Flip phone). He also lends her a CD by the band "LAZERS," which they all enjoyed.
The next day at school, the protagonist is still reeling from the previous day's events. Hiroto, seemingly aware of her singing prowess and the karaoke outing, approaches her with a casual greeting, a stark contrast to Tsukasa's continued coldness. This interaction, however, leads to an accidental collision with Tsukasa, further escalating his apparent anger towards her. The protagonist spends the day in a state of extreme stress due to Tsukasa's palpable irritation.
After school, Hiroto intercepts the protagonist, revealing that Kaito asked him to get his contact information. He also expresses his amusement at the protagonist's singing and her flip phone, giving her his contact and referring to her as "Uuron" and "Garakei." He also mentions that Tsukasa seemed bothered by their interaction. The protagonist, still embarrassed by her flip phone and the nicknames, agrees to exchange contact information. Hiroto also mentions that Tsukasa seemed to be glaring at him, possibly possessive of his childhood friend. The protagonist, overwhelmed by the day's events and Tsukasa's intense gaze, quickly departs.
The chapters conclude with the protagonist feeling a mix of relief and lingering anxiety, while Tsukasa, despite his outward coldness, is shown to be deeply affected by his interactions with Fujikawa and his own inability to express his feelings. He buys bread from her family's bakery, and his internal monologues reveal his continued infatuation and his determination to overcome his shyness. The narrative sets up future interactions and the deepening of relationships between the characters.
