The story picks up with the protagonist, a teacher, dealing with his eccentric science club members as winter break begins. The club is about to embark on a winter camp, which the teacher finds amusing given their lack of social lives. He notes the club's dynamic: Mai, the sole female member, is somewhat of an outsider due to past incidents with other girls who quit the club. The teacher observes the chaotic energy of the club members as they prepare dinner for the camp.
During the camp's dinner preparation, the teacher witnesses the unique personalities of his students. Mai is sharpening a knife with her own whetstone, while Toriumi struggles comically with peeling carrots, creating a mess. Haryuu, though skilled and enthusiastic, lacks planning. Kakumi, physically imposing, is slow to process but thoughtful. Katou, with a seemingly ditzy demeanor, is surprisingly quick-witted and efficient. Kariya is adept at cooking, showing a quiet competence. Shachou, impulsive and driven, is kept from cooking by the teacher's intuition. Hagazaki is rational and possesses a sharp, almost aggressive intellect, while Suzumoto, the club president, is a "jack of all trades, master of none" with a hidden pride and popularity. The students engage in a game of Daifugou with the loser having to buy supplies, a task they try to foist onto the teacher.
After dinner, Mai orchestrates a "dark game" involving homemade mini-cakes, with hidden "bad" ingredients like increased sugar, citric acid cream, and chili. The teacher, initially able to identify the sugar-enhanced cakes, is surprised by Mai's elaborate deception. The students take turns eating the cakes, with several experiencing the unpleasant surprises.
The next day, the club engages in a school-wide game of tag, with glowing bracelets as markers. The teacher, too old for such activities, observes. Later, the students are found playing Daifugou again, with complex rules. The teacher retires for the night, noting the falling snow and the approaching end of Christmas Eve.
The narrative then shifts to a different perspective, introducing Ketorami, who identifies himself as Mai's "watchdog." He recounts how he met Mai during her kidnapping by someone named Fukuyama. Impressed by Mai's audacity and "dangerousness" despite her weakness, Ketorami agreed to become her guardian under his own terms, vowing to observe her until she burns out. He notes Mai's ability to acquire desired powers, though not combat-related ones, and her inherent value lying in her "dangerousness" and willingness to put herself at risk.
A new perspective emerges, that of Tokoyo, a being who lives within Mai. Tokoyo explains that Mai met his mother in the desert, and after Mai killed her, a part of his mother remained within Mai, leading her to find Tokoyo. Tokoyo, who lives in a crevice, feels a connection to Mai and expresses a desire to grow strong enough to protect her. He explains the concept of "Pass" which allows communication between beings like himself and Tokoyo, and mentions Ketorami as a knowledgeable figure. Tokoyo also reveals that Mai's mother's spirit resides within him, and he doesn't resent Mai for it. He expresses affection for Mai and his companions, including Katri.
The story then returns to the teacher's perspective, detailing the chaotic aftermath of the camp. The boys' room is a mess, with many students having stayed up late playing Mahjong. The next morning, many students are absent due to illness or oversleeping. The teacher observes the students building an impressively tall snowman during their "waiting time" for experiments, a testament to their dedication to play. Later, they engage in a complex game of Indian Poker, where the stakes are "black history" confessions. The teacher finds himself being used as a pawn for their "punishment games."
The narrative shifts again to the perspectives of Hagazaki, Shachou, and Suzumoto, who find themselves transported to another world. They are equipped with fantasy-like gear and encounter monstrous creatures. Hagazaki, initially paralyzed by fear, displays incredible combat prowess, killing a bird-like monster. Shachou discovers the ability to "Appraise" objects and beings, while Hagazaki gains "Ice Magic." They realize they have been transported to a world where death is distant but not absent, and they are struggling to adapt to the violence and the loss of their humanity. They decide to rely on Mai, who remains unaware of their predicament and their newfound abilities, as a grounding force to maintain their sanity.
The story then shifts to a discussion between Hagazaki and Mai about the nature of humanity and morality. Hagazaki grapples with the concept of killing and the potential for his own moral decay. Mai, in contrast, emphasizes the importance of human emotions and connections, even if they are irrational.
Later, the club members engage in an arm-wrestling competition. Mai, despite being female, participates and loses to all the boys, expressing a desire to become stronger. Hagazaki, self-conscious about his thin physique, is challenged by Mai and eventually wins, though he finds her determination and desire to be like the boys somewhat perplexing.
The club then engages in a philosophical discussion about the riddle "What kind of bread can't be eaten?" The students debate the definition of "eating" and "bread," leading to increasingly convoluted and humorous arguments. They eventually conclude that the answer lies in the subjective interpretation of the questioner.
On Valentine's Day, the teacher receives chocolates from his female students. Meanwhile, the science club holds another "dark game" involving chocolates, with Mai having secretly added chili to some. The students enjoy the chocolates, with Mai herself accidentally picking a chili-infused one.
The narrative then follows Shachou, Hagazaki, and Suzumoto as they venture out to find supplies. They encounter stronger monsters and realize the danger of their situation. They decide to leave Mai behind, deeming her too weak to accompany them, a decision that weighs heavily on Hagazaki. They discover their "dog tags" have acquired skills, and Shachou's "Appraisal" ability proves crucial for survival. They also learn that Mai, despite her weakness, possesses a unique ability to acquire desired powers.
The story returns to the teacher's perspective, where the students are enjoying chocolates they bought on sale. They have a "chocolate tasting" session, and the teacher finds himself enjoying the experience.
Finally, the narrative focuses on the characters' interactions and their evolving relationships. Ketorami explains his role as Mai's guardian, driven by his fascination with her "dangerousness." Tokoyo, a being within Mai, expresses his desire to protect her and his unique connection to her. Glider, a unique monster, discusses her own existence and her relationship with Ketorami and Mai. Malbelo, a three-headed gatekeeper from the Underworld, explains his role in purifying negative energy and his loyalty to Mai, whom he serves after the Demon King's departure. The characters' interactions reveal their individual struggles, their bonds, and their unique perspectives on life, death, and humanity.
