The story begins with Keios, a high school student and beta tester for the VRMMORPG "Another World," logging into the game for the first time. Having won an expensive VR headset, he chose the Magician class to avoid the awkwardness of real-world combat. His initial experience in the highly realistic virtual forest is immersive, but his first encounter quickly leads to a misunderstanding. Hearing a scream, Keios, a level 1 Magician, intervenes to save a red-haired girl, Lira, from Forest Wolves. He efficiently defeats the monsters with his "Mana Bolt" spell, leveling up in the process. However, he later realizes this wasn't a game event and, fearing he "stole" another player's hunt, apologizes and logs out, feeling deeply embarrassed by his perceived social blunder.
From Lira's perspective, Keios's sudden appearance and powerful magic make him a mysterious hero who saved her and her younger sister, Cynthia, from the wolves threatening their small agricultural Karo Village. The village chief, concerned about increased monster activity linked to rumors of an "Evil God Revival," hails Keios as a true hero, marking Karo Village as the "beginning of the hero Keios legend." Lira is particularly awestruck by Keios's "transfer magic" (his logging out).
Keios then embarks on a week-long journey to Maildia, a large walled city, to level up and acquire better gear. At the Adventurer Guild, he registers with clerk Carlo, who is initially suspicious of Keios's inability to read the game's language and his light equipment, despite his stated profession as a Magician. Keios sells an astonishing 50 high-quality Forest Wolf pelts, impressing Carlo, who recognizes him as a "big rookie" but remains wary. Keios completes his first quests, efficiently dispatching Killer Bees and gathering herbs, demonstrating remarkable combat adaptability by using a "Spider Net" spell to counter the bees' speed. Carlo, increasingly impressed by Keios's skill but still puzzled by his origins, decides to monitor him.
Seeking better potions, Keios researches recipes on a real-world wiki. He visits Maildia's item shop, where he meets Pipin, an 11-year-old alchemy apprentice. Pipin explains the scarcity of higher-grade potions due to dangerous monsters in Oak-controlled territory. Keios, drawing from his wiki knowledge, shares recipes for advanced potions and even the legendary "Elixir." Pipin's father, Nash, an alchemist, is initially skeptical but confirms Keios's information, realizing its immense value for the kingdom and its potential to bring wealth and political advantage. Nash reports this to Israel, a senior alchemist at the Royal Magic Research Institute, who successfully synthesizes the Elixir, confirming Keios's status as an "extraordinary sage."
Back in Maildia, Keios, still struggling with potion supply and his low level, considers party play, recalling past negative MMO experiences. Havoc, an experienced adventurer, invites Keios to join his party for a Kobold extermination quest, ostensibly to train two new recruits, Liam (Warrior) and Cornelia (Elf Archer), and to bypass power-leveling restrictions. Keios, overjoyed but trying to hide his social anxiety, accepts. During the quest, Keios's quick thinking and map UI help the party defeat Giant Moles. His unique ability to make monster corpses vanish (his item inventory) amazes his new teammates. Cornelia, initially moody, is inspired by Keios's combat prowess and resolves to improve.
Deep in a Kobold mine, Keios's paranoia about being set up for Player Killing (PK) leads him to misinterpret a Skeleton's sudden appearance behind Liam. He fires a "Fire Arrow" to warn them, but the party misinterprets this as a display of incredible perception and strategic genius, further cementing his "hero" image. Mortified by the misunderstanding, Keios logs out immediately after the quest, resolving to distance himself from them. Havoc's party, however, continues to praise Keios's skills and character, inspiring Liam and Cornelia to train harder.
Ten days later, Keios, now level 11, travels to the Royal Capital, Maukut, a vast and bustling city. He stocks up on potions but finds most high-end equipment too expensive. At the Adventurer Guild, he mistakenly joins a queue for a specific sewer quest, led by the clumsy new staff member, Nina. Locked in the sewers, Keios encounters Elizabeth, a ghost girl trapped in a dilapidated mansion. Elizabeth, terrified and lonely, reveals she's "already dead" and "a monster." Keios, unfazed, accepts her, leading her to break down in tears of relief. She asks him to destroy a "jewel" binding her to the mansion. Keios complies, and Elizabeth, now free, transforms from a young girl to an adult woman before ascending, thanking Keios. Keios learns through game lore that Elizabeth was cursed to age rapidly after her father tried to bind her soul. Deeply moved by the realism of the VR experience, Keios, despite knowing she'll reset, performs a "meaningless" act of kindness by burying her and her father.
Meanwhile, Nina, searching for the extra adventurer in the sewers, stumbles upon a horrifying scene: a girl in crude clothes being beaten by men. She is then attacked from behind, losing consciousness, hinting at a darker, unfolding conflict within the city.
