The story begins with Yamai Zenjiro, a typical Japanese salaryman, finding himself inexplicably transported from his bicycle ride in Japan to a dimly lit stone chamber. He is greeted by Aura Carpa, the imposing and beautiful Queen of the Carpa Kingdom on the continent of Landrion. Aura apologizes for the abrupt summoning and explains that Zenjiro has been brought to her world, an "otherworld."
Zenjiro, initially bewildered and struggling to accept the reality of being summoned to another world, is eventually convinced by the appearance of a "running dragon" outside the palace window. Aura reveals that she summoned him because he is a descendant of the Carpa royal family, possessing a strong lineage of their unique "time-space magic." Her primary motivation is to secure the continuation of her royal bloodline, as she is the last of her direct line after a long period of war. She proposes that Zenjiro become her husband, or "mukoyori," and marry her.
Zenjiro is shocked by the proposal but Aura explains that her kingdom has suffered greatly from war, leaving her as the sole heir. To preserve their special magic, she needs to marry someone of Carpa royal blood. She reveals that approximately 150 years prior, a first prince fell in love with a commoner and they fled to another world to be together. Zenjiro, due to his village's isolated and historically endogamous nature, has inherited a significant amount of Carpa royal blood, making him a suitable candidate. Aura assures Zenjiro that if he refuses, she will use "return magic" to send him back to his world, and that she has no intention of forcing him.
Zenjiro, after much deliberation and considering his mundane life in Japan, decides to accept Aura's proposal. He realizes that the offer of a life without work, with a beautiful queen, is surprisingly appealing. He also learns that he can return to Japan temporarily to gather belongings before his permanent relocation.
Upon returning to Japan, Zenjiro prepares for his eventual return to the otherworld. He researches portable power sources like generators, realizing the limitations of his world's technology compared to his new reality. He also visits a jewelry store to select a wedding ring for Aura, a custom not prevalent in her world, and learns about the cultural significance of jewelry.
The narrative then shifts to Aura's private meeting with her trusted advisors, including her secretary Fabio Deubage and chief court magician Espiridion. Aura expresses her satisfaction with Zenjiro, noting his intelligence and composure, though she considers his sharp mind a "bad miscalculation" as she desires a husband who is not politically ambitious. She reveals her true desire for a husband who will be content with a life of leisure, thus preventing any potential power struggles or undue influence on her reign. Zenjiro's acceptance of her proposal, despite understanding her intentions, is seen as a positive sign.
The story concludes with Zenjiro preparing to return to the otherworld, armed with a magical carpet that will allow him to transport more belongings. He has also secured a ring for Aura, a gesture that intrigues her. The chapters establish the premise of Zenjiro's summoning, his reluctant but ultimately accepting marriage proposal, and the initial steps he takes to prepare for his new life in the Carpa Kingdom.
