The story begins with Ray Orlost, the eldest son of a prosperous count in the flourishing Earthia Kingdom, reflecting on his idyllic childhood. He was deeply loved by his parents and grew up in a well-regarded household, cherished by his people for their good governance. Ray possessed natural talent in martial arts and academics, and harbored deep affection for two girls: his childhood friend, Letia, the daughter of a maid who helped raise him, and his adopted younger sister, Fina, a delicate girl with silver hair. Ray and the girls grew close, sharing studies, play, and even quarrels, eventually realizing their feelings transcended friendship and promising to marry each other. His parents, accustomed to polygamy among nobles, readily agreed, with the condition that Ray also honor any future noble betrothals. Ray, overjoyed, accepted and became engaged to both Letia and Fina as his second and third wives.
However, this happiness was short-lived. Ray, now in a dimly lit church room, contemplates suicide, having written this account as a final act. He blames his despair on the hero, Hayato Amakake, who he claims stole everything from him.
The narrative flashes back to Ray's thirteenth birthday, the age when children receive a "Job" from the goddess. Jobs are divine blessings that grant specific skills, enhancing one's aptitude in various professions. Ray, Letia, and Fina travel to the royal capital's church for their Job bestowal. Ray receives the "Priest" Job, a highly respected position within the Church of the One God, as Priests can potentially receive divine oracles. He is pleased with this useful Job, while Fina celebrates his success enthusiastically. Ray notices Letia is absent, having gone to a different room for her Job bestowal.
An hour later, a commotion erupts. The High Priest announces the birth of a "Saint," a rare individual blessed by the goddess with immense power, capable of feats like shattering mountains or reviving the dead. The legend states that a Saint's appearance heralds the arrival of a "Hero" and a "Demon Lord." To Ray's shock, the newly proclaimed "Sword Saint" is none other than Letia.
Ray reflects on how Letia and Fina, after gaining their powers, gradually lost interest in him. He believes their love for him was replaced by contempt, and he became insignificant compared to the Hero. He recalls Letia's joyful reunion with him and Fina, where he congratulates her, though he harbors concerns about the Demon Lord's potential emergence. Letia decides to remain in the capital for training, promising to return as his wife after defeating the Demon Lord.
A year passes. Fina receives her Job, becoming the "Sorcery Saint," capable of wielding immense magical power. Both Fina and Letia are sent to the church for training, leaving Ray to focus on his studies to become a Priest and manage his territory. He maintains correspondence with them, learning of their rigorous training and Letia's defeat of the kingdom's strongest swordsman.
Months later, the world is shaken by the prophecy of the Demon Lord's revival and the summoning of a Hero from another world: Hayato Amakake. Hayato, a black-haired, black-eyed youth with exceptional combat and magical abilities, quickly forms a party with the First Princess, Rosina, and the two Saints, Letia and Fina. Ray, now a trainee Priest, receives a letter from Letia and Fina expressing their dislike for Hayato's indecisiveness and his tendency to attract other women, and their longing to return to Ray.
Ray's life takes a devastating turn when he learns his parents have been gravely injured in a monster attack on their territory. He rushes back to find them recovering and entrusts him with managing the Orlost territory. Upon returning to the capital, Ray discovers that Maria Strena, the daughter of a prominent merchant and his own betrothed, has awakened as the "Healing Saint."
The narrative then shifts to Hayato's perspective, revealing his arrival in this world and his ambition for a harem. He manipulates events, using a memory-altering drug on Maria and orchestrating situations to break Letia and Fina's engagement to Ray. He then orchestrates the murder of Ray's parents and the fathers of Letia and Fina, framing it as a result of their defiance.
Ray, consumed by grief and betrayal, confronts Letia and Fina, who cruelly dismiss their past promises and align themselves with Hayato. Maria, though initially confused and manipulated, eventually realizes the truth and attempts to help Ray, but is forced to leave him.
Ray, now completely alone and betrayed, prepares to commit suicide. However, he is contacted by two gods who offer him a chance for revenge against the goddess who orchestrated his downfall. He accepts, receiving a ring that grants him the power to challenge the gods.
The story concludes with Ray returning to his world, determined to exact revenge on the goddess, Hayato, and the Saints who betrayed him. He is now a man driven by a singular purpose, ready to face any obstacle in his path. Meanwhile, Maria, having been manipulated by Hayato, is about to marry him, unaware of the true extent of his deception. The narrative hints at a complex divine conspiracy behind the events, with the goddess Angelica seeking to control the world and obtain Ray for herself.
