The narrative picks up with Haru, a mage, being berated by his childhood friend and renowned adventurer, Leticia Platinus. Leticia, known as the "Goddess of the Land" for her beauty and compassionate demeanor, is in fact a cruel and abusive individual, a facade only Haru is privy to. Haru, tired of Leticia's constant verbal abuse and demeaning treatment, decides he has had enough. He deliberately fails a simple monster encounter, a calculated move to force a confrontation and end their five-year partnership. When Leticia demands he die in her place, Haru finally rebels, declaring he will no longer obey her.
Leticia, shocked by his defiance, threatens to expel him from their party. Haru accepts this, stating he will leave voluntarily. He informs her he will handle the guild registration for his departure and that she must report on their current quest herself. Leticia, still struggling to comprehend his actions, protests, but Haru remains resolute, declaring their relationship over. He leaves, feeling a sense of liberation despite the sadness of losing his childhood friend.
Upon returning to town, Haru reports his departure from Leticia's party to the Adventurer's Guild. The receptionist is surprised, but processes his request smoothly. Seeking a solo quest, Haru finds none available. Just then, a red-haired girl named Alice Sprite approaches him, offering to form a party. Haru, hesitant due to his perceived weakness, is surprised by Alice's intuition that he possesses a strong aura, despite his adventurer card showing him as a low-level mage. He reveals his adventurer card hasn't been updated in over five years because Leticia prevented him from spending money on it, calling it a waste for a "level 7 nobody."
Alice proposes they try a simple quest together to test their compatibility. They accept a quest to defeat Hound Wolves. During the fight, Alice is nearly attacked, but Haru intervenes. Alice praises his timely support, and Haru uses healing magic to mend her minor wound, surprising Alice as mages are not supposed to know healing magic. Haru explains this is due to Leticia's suppression of his knowledge.
A larger Hound Wolf, a King Wolf (level 30), appears. Alice panics, urging Haru to flee, believing him outmatched. Haru, however, confidently defeats the King Wolf with a powerful fire spell, far exceeding the capabilities of a basic "Fire" spell. Alice is astonished, realizing Haru's true strength and that his adventurer card is severely outdated. They decide to update his card at the guild.
At the guild, they discover Haru's true level is 82 and his profession is Sage, a rare magic expert capable of attack, healing, and support. Haru realizes Leticia knew his true power and deliberately kept him suppressed. Alice comforts him, and they decide to form a party.
Later, Haru confronts Leticia at a plaza outside the city. She continues her abusive behavior, claiming Haru is her property. Haru, empowered by Alice's words and his newfound strength, rejects her claims and declares their relationship over. Leticia, enraged, draws her sword, intending to cripple him. Haru, now confident in his abilities, engages her. He uses his powerful magic to defend himself against her advanced sword skills, surprising Leticia with his strength and the effectiveness of his "basic" spells.
The battle escalates, with Haru unleashing his full power, a devastating fire magic that overwhelms Leticia. Though defeated and injured, Leticia remains fixated on controlling Haru, believing she must protect him by keeping him under her control. Haru, however, asserts his independence, stating they are now strangers. He returns to town, where Alice tends to his injuries and they solidify their partnership.
The next morning, Haru and Alice officially form their party. As they leave the guild, Leticia intercepts them again, demanding Haru rejoin her. Alice intervenes, acting as a mediator. After hearing Haru's explanation of Leticia's past abuse and her continued possessiveness, Alice rejects Leticia's attempt to join their party, deeming her a threat to Haru. Leticia, defeated but unyielding, leaves with a final threat. Haru, now free from Leticia's influence, embraces his new path with Alice.
