The story begins with the reawakening of Entropy, the God of Darkness, after a sixteen-hundred-year seal. He is met by the Goddess of Light, one of the five deities who sealed him. She explains that the seal has weakened over time, allowing her to break it alone. Entropy, initially focused on the passage of time and humanity's evolution, expresses concern about potential divine interference. The Goddess of Light, however, seems more interested in his affections, a sentiment he reciprocates with a touch of melancholy.
Entropy, eager to understand the changes in the human world, proposes a unique method of observation: reincarnation. He decides to be reborn as a human to experience the world from within. Sixteen hundred years later, a healthy baby boy is born to a humble couple in a remote mountain village, named Heine. This child is the reincarnation of Entropy.
The narrative then shifts to Heine at eighteen years old. He lives a simple life as the son of a hunter, content with his village existence. He possesses memories of his past life as Entropy, recalling the creation of the world by six gods and the subsequent war that led to his defeat and sealing. This war stemmed from a disagreement about humanity's fate: Entropy believed humans deserved freedom, while the other five gods intended them to be slaves. He is disappointed to learn that his absence likely meant a harsh existence for humans under divine rule.
Heine's peaceful life is disrupted when he and his father return from a successful hunt to find their village overrun by knights in shining armor, who are aggressively rounding up the villagers, particularly the young. Heine, recognizing the emblem on their banners as that of the Goddess of Light, Inflation, realizes these are not ordinary knights. He and his father hide, observing the situation. When the knights forcibly drag his ailing mother from their home, Heine, driven by his human emotions and his connection to his parents, intervenes. He displays surprising combat prowess, easily dispatching several knights. He then confronts the knights' leader, a "Squad Captain" named Besage, who attempts to use a holy magic attack called "Sacred Light Bullet." Heine deflects it, revealing a hidden power.
A new figure emerges: Colleen Karen, a "Hero" of the Light Church, who reprimands Besage for his unauthorized actions and apologizes to Heine and the villagers for the disruption. Karen explains that the Light Church is recruiting new knights and that Besage's methods were too forceful. She requests Heine's cooperation in protecting the world, which is facing increasing threats from monsters as the gods' influence wanes. Despite his initial reluctance and his parents' concern, Heine agrees to join the Light Church, seeing it as an opportunity to investigate the extent of divine intervention in the world.
Heine, accompanied by Karen, travels to Apollo City, the capital and headquarters of the Light Church. He is awestruck by the advanced technology, such as "Etherial Cars," which Besage dismisses as a sign of human decadence. At the Light Cathedral, recruits undergo an attribute test using an "Attribute Board." Heine's test results in the board's needle breaking, indicating his unique nature as the reincarnation of the God of Darkness, for whom there is no designated attribute. Consequently, he is assigned to work in the church's kitchen as a trainee cook, alongside another rejected recruit named Frast.
While working in the kitchen, Heine learns more about the world and the Light Church's structure. He discovers that the Attribute Board is a rudimentary tool and that a more advanced "Attribute Measuring Device" exists, capable of more precise measurements. This device reveals Frast's strong affinity for wind and fire attributes, but his inability to achieve the required light attribute score prevents him from joining the knights. When Heine is tested with the advanced device, it registers zero for all attributes, confirming his unique status. The chapters conclude with Heine and Frast, both relegated to kitchen duties, reflecting on their unexpected paths within the Light Church.
