The protagonist, a reincarnated individual who was once a Japanese man and is now a princess of a minority tribe, finds herself in a world of swords and magic. Having retained her past life's memories, she was raised by her stoic father, a traveler and monster hunter, after being separated from her mother. At the age of seven, her father died during a dragon hunt, leaving her orphaned. She was then taken in by a witch, who recognized her immense latent magical power, amplified by her inability to speak which caused her magic to build up internally. The protagonist, now named Kirin, was trained in magic by the witch, but her true passion lay in combat, a skill honed by her father.
At the age of ten, the witch, who was immortal but nearing death from magical decay, passed on her legacy and a necklace containing her magical knowledge to Kirin. This inheritance also cursed Kirin with eternal youth, leaving her physically a ten-year-old girl forever. For nearly twenty years, Kirin lived as a "Gardener" (an adventurer in this world), excelling in monster hunting and various heroic deeds. However, nearing thirty, she grew tired of the dangerous lifestyle and sought a stable, peaceful life.
Kirin approaches Ren Goard, a Marquis, to find employment. She explains her unique situation: a powerful, immortal ten-year-old with the mind of an adult, seeking a stable job. The Marquis, amused by her predicament, suggests she become a lady-in-waiting, a stable position with social standing. Kirin agrees, and is assigned to the Royal Castle.
Her new life as a lady-in-waiting is a stark contrast to her adventurous past. She struggles with etiquette, the nuances of Japanese honorifics (as her primary language is Japanese, which she uses to communicate via magic), and the delicate tasks of court life. She befriends Kaya, a noblewoman also training as a lady-in-waiting, and reconnects with Riren Kukul, the Marquis's daughter, who is also serving as a lady-in-waiting at the castle.
Kirin's immense strength and past as a renowned "Gardener" known as the "Dragon-Slaying Princess Kirin" quickly become apparent. During her first tea-serving duty, she single-handedly apprehends a spy attempting to infiltrate the castle by smashing through a wall with a wagon. This incident leads to her being recognized by the Blue Knight Commander, who was a former acquaintance. Despite her new role, Kirin's strength and past exploits make her a subject of both awe and amusement.
Her training as a lady-in-waiting involves various duties, including learning embroidery and makeup. She also participates in joint training exercises with the knights, where her overwhelming strength and combat prowess easily defeat seasoned warriors, much to their bewilderment and the amusement of the Blue Knight Commander.
Kirin's desire for stability is tested by her inherent curiosity and the demands of her new life. She finds herself drawn to the simple pleasures of food, particularly the lack of salt in the castle's refined cuisine, which prompts a trip back to her witch's tower to retrieve preserved foods and seasonings. During this trip, she is playfully teased by a golem left by the witch, who misunderstands her preparations as a sign of romantic interest.
Her friends, Kaya and Kukul, also try to guide her towards a more "ladylike" life, pushing her to embrace femininity and social graces. Kirin, though adapting, struggles with the expectations placed upon her, especially when a knight from the Green Knights proposes to her, mistaking her strength and past exploits for a desire for a knightly protector.
The narrative highlights the contrast between Kirin's extraordinary abilities and her desire for a peaceful, ordinary life. She grapples with her past as a legendary adventurer and her present as a lady-in-waiting, all while navigating the complexities of her unique physical and mental state. The world itself is revealed to be a giant tree-like structure, a spaceship that escaped a dying planet, adding a layer of sci-fi to the fantasy setting. Kirin's journey is one of finding her place in this new world, balancing her extraordinary nature with her longing for normalcy.
