The story begins with the protagonist, who lives a masochistic lifestyle of playing difficult games, experiencing a dream of being embraced by an old woman while in the form of a ragged young girl. This dream, filled with comforting words about failure and regret, is interpreted as a sign of stress from overwork. Suddenly, a flash and roar engulf the dreamscape, plunging the protagonist into darkness and a feeling of drowning. They find themselves in water, desperately climbing a large ginkgo tree. Breaking the surface, they vomit and gasp for air, realizing they are in a flooded world under a stormy sky.
The protagonist witnesses a chaotic battle between armies of Vampires and Elves. A golden-haired girl, seemingly a leader, shouts in frustration. A purple-haired man appears, and a fierce magical exchange ensues, with the girl wielding a metal rod and the man commanding water. The protagonist realizes the girl's attack might have been what caused the earlier flash and the disappearance of the old woman from their dream. As the battle escalates with taunts and magical volleys, the protagonist, still clinging to the tree, feels a surge of heat and defiance, declaring, "I don't accept this world!" Tears stream down their face as their words go unheard by the warring factions. A voice, seemingly from within, offers solace and encourages them to cry their fill, to dedicate everything to this world. The protagonist then prays for power, realizing this is a dream, a nightmare, and that they are in the world of a game they played extensively: "Dragon Demon RPG," or "Dorademo."
Waking up with a renewed sense of purpose, the protagonist decides to play "Dragon Demon RPG DX" again, this time through a live stream. They create a female character named Kuroi, a human, which is revealed to be the most unpopular and disadvantaged race in the game. Kuroi starts as a slave farmer, a dire beginning in a world where Vampires control 40% of the continent and Elves the other 40%, with humans relegated to a buffer zone. The game's mechanics are described as brutally realistic and unforgiving, with species having inherent advantages and disadvantages in physical and magical combat.
Kuroi's life as a slave farmer is depicted as one of relentless, solitary hard work, performing strange, repetitive exercises during her meager free time. A priest named Agias Willow observes her, intrigued by her stoic determination and independence. He questions her about her origins and her "preparation" for life.
The narrative then shifts to a live stream commentary by "imodenpun," who details the game's harsh realities, including the near-certain death from encountering dragons and demons, and the lengthy, unskippable war events. Kuroi, despite her slave status, demonstrates exceptional combat prowess when a horde of monsters attacks the settlement. She single-handedly defeats a Shellboar, a rare and powerful monster, acquiring its tusk. This event marks her first battle and is witnessed by Agias Willow, who is impressed by her superhuman abilities.
The game's lore is further explained: magic is tied to guardian deities, with humans lacking one, making them inherently weaker. However, the "DX" version introduces a new element: the "Ogre God" as a potential guardian for humans. Kuroi's combat skills and the acquisition of a rare spell, "Asept Blade," suggest she might be an "Apostle" of this Ogre God, a powerful and rare class.
Meanwhile, the priest Felipo Valch Millennium and the knight Willow discuss the dire situation after the monster attack. They recognize Kuroi's extraordinary strength and propose making her a symbol for humanity's resurgence, a "human god." They plan to bring her to the royal capital, but acknowledge the current political climate is too unstable.
The story then follows Odessen, a disgraced magician, who is conscripted into service as an "Opening District Magician," tasked with alchemy and fire magic. He reveals his research into "Fire Salt," a substance derived from human bodies, which can enhance fire magic. He demonstrates a powerful fire spell, "Fierce Flame," to Willow and Felipo, who see its potential for warfare.
Kuroi, now an "Apostle," is shown to be incredibly powerful, capable of defeating monsters with ease. However, her full potential is hindered by the Ogre God's weakness. The narrative highlights the importance of faith and the collective belief of humans in strengthening their guardian.
The Elves, led by a young princess and a commander named Alxem, arrive with a large force, intending to assess the human settlement's weakened state after the monster attack. Felipo, acting as a diplomat, skillfully deflects their demands, using the recent devastation and the supposed death of the settlement's leader to his advantage. He subtly manipulates the situation, hinting at the presence of a powerful human force and the potential for conflict with the Vampires.
The story concludes with Kuroi, accompanied by the young girl Shira and the magician Odessen, observing the approaching Elves. Kuroi's unique abilities and the growing faith in the Ogre God suggest a turning point for humanity in this brutal world.
