The protagonist, Chitose, a former high school baseball ace whose career was cut short by a severe shoulder injury, receives a VR game system and the game "Lost Legend Online" (LLO) from his younger sister, Haruka. Initially hesitant due to his lack of gaming experience, Chitose decides to try it, partly out of concern for his sister and partly to fill the void left by baseball.
Chitose begins by customizing his avatar. He starts with a scan of his real-life appearance but alters it significantly to avoid being recognized, opting for a more flamboyant, tanned look with lighter hair. He then chooses his profession, settling on "Spearman" due to his familiarity with wielding a bat and the weapon's reach, which he believes will offer a safer playstyle for a beginner. For his initial skills, he selects five based on his past baseball experiences: "Throwing" (inspired by pitching), "Strong Swing" (for hitting power), "Jump" (for athletic ability), "Loud Voice" (for calling out on the field), and "Under Pressure" (for his never-give-up attitude). He names his avatar "Chitose."
Upon entering the game, Chitose finds himself on a ship arriving at a continent with a lost civilization. He is advised by an NPC to register at the Adventurer's Guild. However, Haruka contacts him in-game, revealing she's also there. They become friends, and Haruka explains that LLO lacks a main story, focusing instead on quests, reputation, and equipment acquisition. Haruka also mentions that two of her skilled female friends, Kirika and Makoto, will join them. Makoto is an old acquaintance from their neighborhood.
The group accepts their first quest: "Defeat Ten Goblins." During their journey to the goblin settlement, Chitose's skills are discussed. Kirika and Makoto express skepticism about the usefulness of most of his choices, particularly "Loud Voice" and "Jump," while acknowledging "Strong Swing" and "Under Pressure" as potentially thematic. They are surprised by the "Throwing" skill's effectiveness when Chitose, using his pitching experience, manages to one-shot a Goblin Mage from a considerable distance with a thrown stone, initiating the first combat.
The party engages the remaining goblins. Kirika, a close-combat fighter, and Chitose form the front line, while Makoto, a mage, and Haruka, a healer, are the back line. During the fight, Kirika is paralyzed by a Goblin Hunter's poisoned arrow. Haruka, unable to cure the status effect at her current level, instructs Chitose to use "War Cry" to draw enemy aggro. To everyone's surprise, Chitose's "Loud Voice" skill, when combined with "War Cry," stuns the enemies. This allows Chitose to defeat the Goblin Lancer, and with Makoto's fireballs and Chitose's spear attacks, they defeat the remaining goblins. Chitose levels up to Lv. 2, gaining a new ability, "Two-Stage Thrust." They also receive a Goblin Lance as loot, which significantly boosts Chitose's stats. The party realizes the quest's recommended level had been unexpectedly raised to Lv. 4, explaining the difficulty. After completing the quest and receiving a surprisingly large reward, the party disbands. Haruka stays to help Chitose with shopping and equipment upgrades.
The next day, Chitose logs in alone and heads south into a dark forest. He encounters and easily defeats weak "Bat" monsters, collecting "Bat Wings." He then rescues a purple-haired girl named Charonne from a "Huge Bat." Charonne, an alchemist, needs "Bat Blood" and "Ant Acid." Chitose helps her by defeating a "Worker Ant" and a "Huge Bat," leveling up to Lv. 3 and learning "Spear Mastery 1." Charonne, who was a renowned producer in the beta test, is impressed by Chitose's skill and adds him as a friend, promising to repay his kindness. They part ways in town. Haruka then contacts Chitose, informing him that Makoto needs help and that they are not yet friends in-game. They head to meet Makoto.
