The protagonist, a high school student named Michio, finds himself deeply disillusioned with his life in Japan. He experiences subtle bullying at school, feels isolated, and has a strained relationship with his father, who became distant after his mother's death. Michio practices Kendo and Aikido, which have given him physical strength but haven't improved his social standing. He feels that power is the ultimate determinant in society, yet even power isn't enough to reach the top.
Feeling a sense of despair, Michio stumbles upon a suicide website. While not fully committed to ending his life, the site offers a morbid fascination. He contemplates his lack of attachments and his impoverished family situation, which makes higher education seem impossible. He also harbors a desire to experience romance before dying and fears the pain of death.
While browsing the suicide site, Michio clicks on a link titled "Before you decide to commit suicide." This leads him to a page offering an escape: reincarnation into another world. He is presented with various world types, including a world of magic. He chooses a world with humans, elves, and dwarves. The process involves numerous customization options, including war frequency, dungeon or field-based exploration, and language selection. He chooses a slightly more friendly world and opts for both dungeon and field exploration.
The next stage involves setting bonus points. Michio, being meticulous, spends a considerable amount of time rerolling for optimal stats, aiming for high numbers. After much effort, he achieves a perfect score of 99 bonus points. He then proceeds to character customization, where he can allocate these points to various parameters, equipment, spells, and skills. He discovers a "Character Re-setting" skill, allowing him to freely reallocate points. He also selects "Experience Reduction" and "Experience Gain" skills, along with "Second Job."
Upon confirming his settings, Michio is presented with a stark warning: he has chosen to abandon his world and can never return. After confirming twice, his consciousness is pulled away.
Michio awakens in a straw-filled shed, disoriented. He realizes he is in a world with a horse and can understand the horse's name, "Horse," through a skill he recalls selecting: "Appraisal." He confirms his identity as "Kaga Michio, Male, 17 years old, Villager Lv1," realizing he has been transported into the game he was setting up. He finds himself wearing his familiar tracksuit and barefoot. He equips "Sandal Boots" and discovers he has also acquired the "Thief Lv1" job, likely due to stealing the boots. He also finds "Durandal," a powerful two-handed sword, and "Ring of Resolve," a bonus accessory.
Emerging from the shed, Michio finds himself in a rural village. He observes the villagers and their levels using Appraisal. He witnesses a bandit attack and, despite his low level, decides to intervene, wielding Durandal. He single-handedly defeats the bandits, including their leader, a Lv41 bandit. The villagers are grateful, and the village chief, Somara, invites him to his home.
Michio learns that the world speaks Brahim, a language he inexplicably understands and can speak. He also discovers that his actions have leveled him up to Villager Lv2 and Thief Lv2. He learns about the concept of guilds and the difficulty of changing professions. He also learns about "Intelligence Cards," which serve as proof of defeating bountied individuals.
Michio spends time in the village, learning about its customs and economy. He sells rabbit pelts, a rare drop from Slow Rabbits, to the local merchant, Vicker, and acquires some basic equipment. He also learns about the existence of magic and the strict requirements to become a mage. He attempts to hunt monsters, finding Slow Rabbits manageable with Durandal but struggling with a Copper Sword. He also discovers that his bonus points are tied to his job and can be reallocated.
During his stay, Michio witnesses the consequences of theft when a villager who swapped a bandit's bandana is punished by being made a slave. He also encounters a former adventurer's widow, Tilih, and her deceased husband's sword, "Flame Rapier," which he activates with a spell. He also learns about "Monster Cards" and "Skill Slots."
Michio eventually decides to travel to the town of Bale with Vicker via horse-drawn carriage. During the journey, he encounters more monsters, including a Slime Starch, which he defeats with Durandal. He also learns that magic is rare and difficult to attain. He realizes his bonus points are not increasing as expected and deduces it's linked to his job selection. He reallocates his points, focusing on combat and experience gain.
Upon arriving in Bale, Michio witnesses the slave being sold. He also learns about the existence of adventurer guilds and the difficulty of changing professions. He discovers that his actions in protecting the village have earned him the "Hero Lv1" job. He also obtains the "Farmer Lv1" job by participating in harvesting.
The narrative concludes with Michio preparing to depart Bale, reflecting on his new life and the challenges ahead. He has accepted this world as his reality and is determined to survive, even if it means resorting to violence. He also contemplates the possibility of his past life's father being connected to this new world.
