The protagonist, Kajiwara Hikaru, a 25-year-old factory worker, wakes up in a forest under a starry sky, disoriented and with no memory of how he got there. He realizes he's lost and his smartphone has no signal. After a brief panic, he attempts to recall his last memories, which involve working overtime and taking a nap in his car. His initial hope of finding civilization is dashed when he hears what he initially mistakes for human voices, only to realize it's a wolf-like creature. He climbs a tree to escape, where he witnesses a beastly, fur-covered humanoid creature, identified by a mysterious blue window as a Level 1 "Kobold."
The Kobold, after consuming its prey, notices Hikaru in the tree and attempts to climb up. In a desperate act of self-preservation, Hikaru kicks and stomps on the Kobold's head, causing it to fall. Hikaru then grabs the Kobold's neck to avoid falling himself, but the creature eventually loses its grip, and both plummet to the ground. The Kobold dies upon impact, and Hikaru, though injured, survives. He realizes he might have been transported to another world, a common trope in light novels, and checks his own status, finding himself with all zero stats except for minor attack and defense bonuses from his safety shoes, and a "Profession: ERROR (Undeterminable)" status. He also discovers that defeating the Kobold granted him experience points.
The next day, Hikaru, still lost in the forest, finds edible plants like "Forest Ginger," "Perilla Seeds," and "Great Sesame," though they are mostly medicinal or used as condiments. He then discovers a fruit called "Effi Fruit," which is sweet, juicy, and replenishes MP. However, eating it causes him to feel nauseous, and his status changes to "Mana Overload (Minor)." He learns from his status window that this is a temporary condition that can be cured by consuming MP, but as he has no skills, he cannot do so. He discovers he can expel the excess mana through his breath, thus saving himself from a potentially fatal mana overload.
Hikaru then encounters two Level 1 Goblins. He manages to evade them initially, but they lead him into a trap where five to six more Goblins are waiting. Just as he's about to be overwhelmed, a young girl with black short hair and a sword, named Almatina, a Level 9 "Apprentice Paladin," intervenes. She swiftly defeats two Goblins with fire magic and her sword, but her MP is depleted. Hikaru, using his newfound ability to manipulate mana, throws a stone to distract a Goblin archer, allowing Almatina to recover and defeat the remaining Goblins.
Almatina, grateful for Hikaru's help and impressed by his ability to manipulate mana despite having no skills, offers to introduce him to the Adventurer's Guild. They travel to the city of "Daijel," where Hikaru's unusual status and combat history are met with skepticism by a soldier and an "Appraiser" named Philusdime. Despite his zero stats and "Skill: Unobtainable" status, his combat achievements are undeniable. He sells some of his gathered ingredients, including the valuable Effi Fruits, for a considerable sum of money.
Hikaru learns that in this world, professions are determined at adulthood, and he is an anomaly. Almatina, who is also considered to have a "disadvantageous" profession as an Apprentice Paladin, offers him support. They head to the Adventurer's Guild, where Hikaru registers and takes on a low-risk herb-gathering quest. He also purchases basic equipment: an iron sword and leather armor.
Over the next few days, Hikaru trains in self-taught magic, learning to control mana and even create a "magic sword" by igniting mana around his blade. Almatina, inspired by Hikaru's unconventional methods, also practices and eventually learns the "Magic Sword" skill, which allows her to use fire-attributed attacks. She also discovers she can job-change to a full "Paladin," a powerful class.
During their training, they encounter a Hobgoblin and a Blade Wing, both significantly higher level than them. They are forced to retreat to the city for help. Later, while training, Almatina accidentally unleashes a powerful fire attack, depleting her MP and causing her to faint. Hikaru, using his mana, replenishes her MP and helps her recover. He also learns that his own body, being from another world, can function without MP, making him immune to the effects of MP depletion.
The narrative then shifts to their daily lives: Hikaru gathers herbs and trains, while Almatina trains and takes on monster-hunting quests. Hikaru also discovers he can use mana to manipulate objects, creating a "Living Sword" effect, though it's not very practical. Almatina, through her training and Hikaru's guidance, progresses significantly, even learning to use fire magic without relying solely on her skills.
The story concludes with Hikaru and Almatina preparing to take on a quest to hunt monsters in the forest, facing the challenges of this new world together.
