The narrative picks up with Teppei Komeyoshi meeting his childhood friend and classmate, Ai Yukiyanagi, at their usual hangout, a family restaurant called "Denki." Ai has a "serious" request regarding her crush, Yuzuru-senpai, a popular, accomplished, and seemingly unattainable third-year student who is the school's "Prince Charming." Teppei, who views their world as a "love comedy" with Yuzuru as the protagonist and the "Four Heavenly Maidens" as potential heroines, tries to dissuade Ai, emphasizing her status as a "mob character" in this perceived narrative. He recounts various rumored romantic entanglements of Yuzuru with the "Four Heavenly Maidens," including Nina Hattori, Rara Kirigakure, Haruhi Ukai, and Madoka Kanbe, highlighting how Yuzuru's romantic life is already a complex plot. Despite Teppei's efforts, Ai remains determined, asking Teppei to help her "destroy the love comedy" and become Yuzuru's main heroine. Teppei reluctantly agrees, harboring his own unexpressed feelings for Ai and wanting to support her happiness, even if it means suppressing his own.
The story then shifts to Teppei discussing his "love comedy" theory with his friend Sousuke Dei. Sousuke, a pragmatic and somewhat cynical individual, initially dismisses Teppei's ideas as those of a "painful person" and mocks his grand pronouncements about the world. Teppei explains his belief that their world is a love comedy centered around him and Ai, with Yuzuru as the protagonist, and that Ai wants to break this narrative to become Yuzuru's main heroine. Sousuke, while initially dismissive, eventually agrees to help Teppei organize his thoughts, albeit in his own unconventional way, by drawing a picture of Kirby. Through this interaction, Sousuke introduces the concept of "destroying" the narrative, suggesting that he, as a "friend character," can deviate from his role and disrupt Teppei's perceived story. He hints at the existence of an "author" who created their world and manipulates events, and that Teppei must accept his role within this narrative, even if it leads to an undesirable outcome. Sousuke also reveals that he has a girlfriend from another school, which Teppei had forgotten.
Later, Teppei wakes up with a strange sense of unease, feeling as though something has changed and something has been lost, though he cannot recall any specific dreams. He goes to the family restaurant, where Ai is already waiting. To his utter shock, Ai confesses her feelings for him, not Yuzuru. Teppei is bewildered, recalling their previous conversation about Yuzuru and their plan to "destroy the love comedy." He initially suspects a prank or a misunderstanding, but Ai's genuine confusion and her confession that she has liked him since they first met, with his picture now on her phone instead of Yuzuru's, convince him. He realizes his entire perception of their world as a Yuzuru-centric love comedy was a delusion fueled by his own feelings and perhaps an overactive imagination. He confesses his own long-held feelings for Ai, and they become a couple, much to the surprise of the restaurant patrons.
In the aftermath, Teppei is overjoyed to be dating Ai, finding the world suddenly brighter. He catches a cold, and while recovering, Sousuke visits. Sousuke reveals that Ai had also confided in him about Teppei, and that he had been mediating their "consultations." He also recounts seemingly fabricated past events, like a summer festival date and a cultural festival, that Teppei has no memory of. Sousuke then reveals that he has a girlfriend and that Teppei's perception of their world and the "author" might be a misunderstanding, or perhaps a consequence of Teppei's own desires and the author's twisted intentions. The narrative ends with Teppei reflecting on his past loneliness as a transfer student and a pivotal moment where Ai intervened when he was about to destroy a mud ball, hinting at a deeper connection and a shared past that Teppei may have forgotten or misinterpreted.
