The story begins with Dort Jaeger, a seasoned dragon master in the military nation of Garnmossa, being unceremoniously fired. Despite his crucial role in caring for the nation's dragons, which are the source of its military strength, Dort is dismissed by a disgruntled former officer now relegated to administrative duties. Garnmossa is undergoing military downsizing due to public pressure, leading to an increase in dismissals. Dort, nearing 35 and physically and mentally exhausted from his demanding, low-paying job, accepts his fate, planning to return to his village and farm. He bids farewell to the dragons, particularly the elder dragon Tsargel, whose mournful roars echo through the castle, causing widespread alarm.
Meanwhile, Garnmossa's King, preoccupied with his kingdom's depleted treasury, is pleased with his cost-saving measure of dismissing employees, especially those of lower status. His mood brightens with the arrival of Princess Milena of the Altreo Federation, a major dragon-producing nation. Milena, a skilled dragon rider known as the "Dragon Princess," engages in a lighthearted exchange with the King, who is clearly infatuated with her. He intends to purchase two more dragons, a transaction that effectively requires Milena's presence. Milena, aware of Garnmossa's financial straits and the King's dismissals, subtly inquires about his methods. The King proudly reveals his strategy of firing "useless" staff, a statement that shocks Milena, who recalls the vital role of dragon masters like Dort, whom she met years ago. Realizing the King's ignorance, she decides to recruit Dort for Altreo.
Milena dispatches her two attendant knights, Sera and Laura, to find Dort. Coincidentally, Dort, having just checked into a modest inn, encounters Sera and Laura as they leave their adjacent room. Shortly after, Milena herself rushes out and bumps into Dort, recognizing him immediately. Dort, however, has no recollection of her. Milena, frustrated but determined, brings Dort back to her room, where she formally introduces herself as the Princess of Altreo and offers him a position as their dragon master. Dort, still weary from his dismissal and planning a quiet life, declines her offer, explaining the immense physical and emotional toll the dragon master profession took on him.
Despite his refusal, Dort's innate sense of responsibility is triggered when he notices an injured dragon belonging to Milena's group. He advises Sera to avoid riding the injured dragon, but she dismisses his warning. The injured dragon, provoked by Sera's careless handling, goes berserk. Dort, using his exceptional skills, subdues the dragon and rescues Sera, demonstrating his profound understanding of dragons. Milena is deeply impressed by his abilities and his compassionate nature, especially when he helps the escaped Garnmossa dragon, "No. 26," find refuge in Altreo, a secret shared between them.
Milena's persistent efforts, coupled with Sera's newfound respect and offer to teach Dort farming, eventually persuade him to accept a position in Altreo. He agrees to work as a dragon master, albeit with reservations, and begins his second life in Altreo, finding a surprising contentment in the newfound liveliness and camaraderie. Meanwhile, back in Garnmossa, the dragon knights, having disregarded Dort's advice about bathing dragons in the evening, suffer a consequence when a dragon, mistreated by a new recruit, escapes and causes casualties, further highlighting the loss of a skilled dragon master.
