The narrative begins with Duke Idiots, son of the Duke's family, publicly denouncing and breaking his engagement with Princess Pacian at a party. He accuses her of harassment and declares his intention to marry Lady Prie instead. Princess Pacian, the third princess, is the youngest of the royal children and was raised with less attention than her older siblings. Unlike them, she has dull blonde hair and golden eyes with blue flecks, and lacks the regal composure of her family. Her upbringing was neglected: a careless wet nurse, a lack of tutors, inadequate maids, and only one knight, Arjan, a commoner, as her sole protector. This led her to grow up boisterous and wild, often engaging in activities like catching insects and playing with sticks, much to the dismay of her maids and the amusement of Arjan, who found her behavior reminiscent of his own childhood.
Arjan has been Princess Pacian's escort knight since she was three, and her engagement to Idiots was decided when she was five. Their relationship was fraught from the start, with Idiots, then eleven, looking down on the seven-year-old Pacian's childish antics. He was a spoiled child who demanded respect, while Pacian saw him as a playmate or even a subordinate, often teasing him to tears. Arjan and others viewed their interactions as a form of childish bickering, hoping they would positively influence each other. However, Idiots was easily swayed by Lady Prie, a seemingly submissive young lady who flattered him. Pacian's "harassment" of Idiots and Prie involved actions like attaching beetles to Prie's clothes, which she considered a mark of her "retainer."
Following the engagement annulment, Pacian declares her intention to become an adventurer, inspired by a children's book. Arjan, a former adventurer, is tasked with accompanying her, a decision approved by the King, who likely hopes the experience will temper her. Arjan, despite his reservations about her recklessness, prepares extensively, securing top-tier equipment and a sturdy carriage. He understands that Pacian, despite her royal status, is unaware of the harsh realities of an adventurer's life.
Weeks pass as Arjan meticulously prepares for their journey, facing constant rejections for additional guards or a skilled maid. Meanwhile, Pacian disappears into the palace, only to reappear just as Arjan finishes his preparations. They depart in a specially made carriage, with Pacian insisting on riding on the driver's seat. After leaving the capital, Pacian eventually retreats into the carriage, but soon returns with cushions, unwilling to leave the driver's seat.
Upon reaching a town, Arjan takes Pacian to the Adventurer's Guild. He requests the Guild Master to create an adventurer card for her, intending for her to complete a simple herb-gathering quest to satisfy her desire for adventure. Pacian is thrilled with her new card and eagerly declares her intention to form a party and take on quests.
Their first quest, herb gathering, leads them to a grassy plain. While Pacian initially shows surprising aptitude for identifying herbs, their excursion is interrupted by a pack of twenty Wargs. Arjan instructs Pacian to flee to town and report, while he attempts to distract the beasts. However, Pacian refuses to abandon him, declaring her duty as a leader. To Arjan's astonishment, she then produces a "magic gun," a weapon of the hero, from her bag and, along with a "magic bag" and a hero's sword, single-handedly defeats the Wargs. Arjan realizes Pacian has stolen these powerful artifacts from the royal treasury. Despite his initial shock and concern about the consequences, he accepts the hero's sword and agrees to continue as her escort, realizing he is now bound to her quest. They decide to travel away from the capital to avoid encountering Idiots and Prie, who have become commoners after Idiots's father disowned him for his actions.
Meanwhile, Lady Prie, from a impoverished noble family, recounts her own story. She was forced to attend noble school despite her family's poverty and was advised to marry for wealth. She used flattery to survive and avoid being exploited, which led Idiots to believe she was infatuated with him. Her life took a turn when she accidentally healed Idiots with her rare light magic, a latent ability of her family line. This revelation led to her family's debts being cleared and her being appointed to support Princess Pacian, along with Idiots. Prie is dismayed to be paired with Idiots, whom she finds insufferable and weak, especially after he caused her to be disowned and nearly ruined her life. She is also tasked with supporting Pacian, who is now an adventurer, and is resigned to the chaotic journey ahead, though she secretly possesses other convenient magic abilities.
