The story begins with Yuffie Frainert Crusloden, a 24-year-old female Count, being confronted by her husband, who demands a divorce. He is the son of a Duke and has never fulfilled his duties as Count, relying solely on his noble lineage. Yuffie, who inherited her title due to her parents' death, manages her territory efficiently and is exasperated by her husband's ignorance and arrogance. He believes he can claim her title and estate if they divorce, a notion Yuffie quickly dispels, explaining that titles are granted by the King and can only be returned to the royal family. Her husband's mistress, a gaudily dressed woman, is also present and mistakenly believes she will inherit the estate. Yuffie, unimpressed, has her husband forcibly removed by the butler and the mistress ejected by knights. The Duke's family apologizes for their son's behavior, sending a valuable painting as a gift.
The following days are filled with her husband's absurd schemes. He announces he will travel, but Yuffie denies him any travel funds, citing his inability to state a destination or purpose. He then declares he will become a knight, but after an incident where he breaks a bone, he shifts his ambition to becoming a civil servant. Yuffie, seeing an opportunity, places him in the tax department, hoping his incompetence will expose illicit activities. To her surprise, he accidentally uncovers tax evasion by the powerful Marquis Maximilian, albeit by mistakenly presenting his own family's tax documents as evidence. This inadvertently exposes a loophole that the Marquis was exploiting, earning Yuffie's family favor with the neutral Finance Minister.
His next aspiration is to become a priest, and he dedicates himself to the endeavor, even collecting donations. However, his romantic pursuit of a lady-in-waiting named Raphelia leads to his downfall. After a night with her, he is imprisoned by priests who steal his recommendation letters, and Raphelia becomes the head priestess. Yuffie, amused by his misfortunes, eventually helps him by exposing the fraudulent recommendation letters, leading to Raphelia's removal and the recommendation of Lord Roan Ravello instead.
Her husband then disappears, leading Yuffie to suspect he has eloped with Raphelia. However, a court mage reveals he was transported to another world through a dimensional rift. Yuffie is initially relieved to be rid of him but finds herself unexpectedly sad. He returns shortly after, transformed and claiming to have defeated demons in the other world. He announces his intention to hunt down other demons, equipped with a divine artifact that creates dimensional rifts. He bids Yuffie farewell, believing she dislikes him, and departs.
Years later, a significantly aged but still handsome husband returns. He reveals he has defeated over 200 demons and retired. Yuffie informs him they have a son, Arriverto, whom she raised alone. He is shocked and apologizes for abandoning her. Yuffie confesses her feelings, explaining she never saw him as a husband but as a dear friend, and that his absence caused her worry. They reconcile, and he decides to stay, their relationship evolving from a strained marriage to a genuine partnership. Their story becomes a popular novel, and Yuffie, now a grandmother, reflects on their unconventional journey.
