Lady Evelyn, daughter of the Milburn Ducal House—one of the Eight Great Ducal Houses—was scheduled to marry in three months. Her fiancé was Bernard, the heir of the Taylor Ducal House, another of the Eight Great Ducal Houses.

However, he brought a commoner girl into his mansion and, to Evelyn's disbelief, had her wear Evelyn's dresses and jewels while whispering words of love. Furthermore, the girl was pregnant with his child, and he declared his intention to eventually cast Evelyn aside and take the girl as his mistress.

Upon learning of her fiancé's betrayal, Evelyn feigned the role of an understanding fiancée and steadily began to lay the groundwork to bring about their downfall.
