The protagonist wakes up as a caterpillar-like monster with multiple vision displays, finding himself in a world where he can eat leaves that regenerate and produce silk. He recalls his past life as a lonely man who bought a birthday cake alone the day before his birthday, lamenting his lack of romantic relationships. This new existence is a stark contrast to his previous life.
He discovers he can absorb ambient "mist" and expel it as silk, which has adhesive properties when connected to his body and becomes strong and beautiful when detached. Through repeated practice, he improves his silk-producing ability, likening it to skill leveling. He hypothesizes that this "mist" is magic and that his silk production is a magical ability. Experimenting further, he manages to create an "Ice Needle" spell by imagining water freezing, marking his first true magical achievement, though it exhausts him.
Upon further reflection, he considers the possibility of being in an isekai (another world) and worries about being a weak monster. He decides he needs to grow stronger before venturing out. He practices his magic, increasing the size of his ice projectiles, and observes another caterpillar, whom he names "Imomushi Jiro," on a nearby leaf.
His practice is interrupted by the arrival of adventurers: a nimble girl in leather armor, a heavily armored warrior, and a robed figure. When Imomushi Jiro attempts to attack the girl with silk, the warrior swiftly kills him. This event deeply shocks the protagonist, reinforcing his need for strength.
He then decides to explore a hollow in the tree, which he believes might be an entrance to a dungeon. He crafts a bow and arrows from branches and leaves, and his magic evolves into "Ice Balls." Upon entering the hollow, he discovers it's a mix of natural tree and artificial structures, resembling ruins. He encounters a trap that sprouts a spear from the ground, forcing him to retreat. He then faces a large blue bat, but his magic proves ineffective. He manages to wound it with his bow, and it flees.
He then decides to ascend the massive World Tree, using his silk abilities to traverse its exterior. He encounters other green caterpillars, possibly of the same species but with different coloration, and notes his own blue exterior might indicate rarity. After a long climb, he reaches the summit and finds a dome-shaped building. Inside, he finds a pedestal with a device resembling a "Scouter" from Dragon Ball, which he calls the "Jewel of Wisdom." Upon wearing it, he gains language comprehension and telepathy skills, and receives a message from the "Labyrinth King," revealing the building is the "World Tree Labyrinth" and hinting at other labyrinths and the "true meaning of this world." He also obtains a "Status Plate (Black)," which allows him to view his stats, revealing his race as a "Diacrawler (inferior species of Giant Crawler)" and his skills, including "Intermediate Appraisal" and "Silk Spinning." He also acquires a "Flying Skill Tree."
Returning to his home leaf, he learns the tree is the "World Tree" and his crafted items have lost their original power due to poor processing. He then re-enters the labyrinth, using his appraisal skill to detect traps and avoid them. He hears a voice from a pit and uses telepathy to communicate with a girl named Shirone Evergreen Suirou, a "Half-Forest Person" (elf). He rescues her from the pit, and she explains that people call intelligent beasts "Star Beasts." She identifies him as a "Star Beast" and offers to guide him to her village, Suirou Village, which is the closest settlement. She also mentions the existence of adventurer guilds and the possibility of obtaining "classes" at Furo Village.
They travel to Suirou Village, where he is initially mistaken for a tamed monster but is eventually accepted as a "Star Beast" adventurer. He is given a black status plate, which is updated, and registered as a G-rank adventurer. He receives basic adventurer gear: a knife and a magical pouch that can store two types of items. He also learns about the currency, which is translated into Yen, and the existence of gold, silver, and copper coins.
He visits a blacksmith and purchases a short spear, and then a clothing store where he buys linen vests and gowns, as the more advanced silver-threaded clothing requires significant tailoring for his body. He learns that the blue color of adventurer gear is due to water attribute enchantments. He then checks into an inn, where he is treated as a person rather than a monster, and receives two meals a day. He experiments with human food, finding the soup edible but the bread-like item unappetizing. He also decides to store his valuable items in his magical pouch.
The next day, he purchases a larger backpack and returns to the clothing store to get his custom-made clothes. He learns that coats are also available but require extensive alteration for his body. He also learns that the blue color of adventurer gear is due to water attribute enchantments. He then heads to the Adventurer's Guild to begin his journey as an adventurer.
