The narrative begins with William Stance recounting his impoverished upbringing in a southern farming family in 1916. His childhood was marked by hardship, including crop failures and the encroaching modernization that displaced small farmers. He witnessed his father's struggle to adapt, his descent into alcoholism, and the eventual abandonment of their farm. A pivotal moment occurred when, at fifteen, William intervened in his father's violent attack on his mother, killing his father with a baseball bat. This traumatic event, coupled with his mother's subsequent death from pneumonia, left William orphaned and under the care of his grandmother.
Years later, William is conscripted into the army. During a brutal campaign, he refuses an order to harm civilian women, leading to his imprisonment. In jail, he meets Sergeant Raul Dyson, a cynical but kind-hearted soldier who becomes his friend and mentor. Raul shares his dreams of a peaceful life and instills in William the importance of self-reliance and kindness. After their release, they go their separate ways, but the war leaves William adrift and haunted by his past.
He eventually settles in a small town and finds work at a blacksmith shop. He reconnects with Raul, who has opened an Italian restaurant called "Daisun's" with his wife, Wendy. William becomes a regular, finding solace and friendship in their company. However, their peace is shattered when the local mafia, the Blood Eyes Family, extorts Raul. When Raul attempts to negotiate, he is murdered. Consumed by grief and rage, William systematically eradicates the Blood Eyes Family, enacting his own brutal form of justice.
After this act of vengeance, William is approached by Bif Kyuse, the second-in-command of the powerful Sanders Family, a mafia organization. Impressed by William's ruthlessness and efficiency, Bif offers him a place in their ranks, promising security and purpose. William accepts, but only after securing the safety of Raul's pregnant wife and unborn child. He becomes known as "License to Kill," a legendary assassin operating under the Sanders Family.
William carries out numerous assassinations for the family, targeting criminals and corrupt officials. He reflects on his actions, driven by a distorted sense of justice and the memory of Raul's dreams. Years later, now weary of his violent life, William is approached by Patty Scully, a woman who reveals herself to be an EBI investigator and the daughter of Donald Scarlock, a man William killed. Patty, who had infiltrated his life under false pretenses, confronts him. Despite her mission, she confesses her love for him. William, acknowledging his past and his actions, accepts his fate. He is imprisoned, where he recounts his story to a lawyer, Emilio Wisdom, finding a measure of peace in sharing his truth. The narrative concludes with a poignant dream sequence, mirroring William's childhood trauma and hinting at a cyclical nature of violence and the longing for a different path.
