The narrative picks up with Princess Leila, the recently crowned ruler of a small, forgotten kingdom nestled beside a lake and surrounded by a forest. Her coronation ceremony, which involved an unusual midnight crowning and a lack of undergarments, was interrupted by the sudden appearance of Genbu, a stoic bodyguard. Genbu reveals he was sent by Leila's maternal grandfather, Aoshima Ryuzo, who lives in Japan. Ryuzo's letter explains that Genbu is to be Leila's bodyguard, a measure he regrets not implementing for Leila's mother. He also expresses a desire for Leila to visit Japan.
Genbu, who also serves as Leila's secretary, introduces two young girls, Aki and Saki, who will attend to her daily needs. Aki and Saki, who possess large tails and are implied to be non-human, are initially shy but quickly become comfortable with Leila, even assisting her in bathing. Leila, who has half-Japanese heritage, finds comfort in her new companions.
The following morning, Leila wakes to find Aki and Saki asleep in her room, having transformed from their fox-like forms. They explain they fell asleep after being brought to her room. After getting dressed in kimonos they brought, Genbu interrupts, reminding them of proper etiquette. The group then heads to breakfast, where Leila discovers the usual staff has been replaced. Genbu explains he dismissed the previous staff for attempting to poison her food, which consisted of Western dishes. He has replaced them with a Japanese chef who prepares traditional Japanese cuisine, which Genbu can verify is safe due to his inability to be poisoned and reliance on taste. Leila agrees to tolerate the new food, requesting a balance of Japanese and Western meals.
Over the next month, Leila begins studying Japanese, as Genbu communicates telepathically. She learns that assassins have been targeting her almost daily, suggesting a bounty on her head, possibly orchestrated by her father's brother, her stepmother, or her step-siblings, who stand to inherit the throne if she is gone. Aki and Saki prove capable of defending Leila, having recently subdued an intruder. Genbu proposes a visit to Japan for Leila to pay her respects and potentially negotiate rare earth trade. This plan is also intended to allow the Four Gods (Genbu, Suzaku, Seiryu, and Byakko), who are guardians, to eradicate Leila's enemies under the guise of national defense.
The day before their departure, Leila is informed that Genbu will remain behind. She is instructed to keep a specific necklace, a family heirloom containing a sealed demon king, with her at all times. This necklace is the key to her family's lineage and is the likely reason for the assassination attempts. The plan for their arrival in Japan involves meeting Suzaku, a woman in red, and potentially her grandfather. Their itinerary includes formal greetings, meetings with government officials, a banquet, trade discussions, and a secret visit to Disneyland.
On the flight to Japan, Leila is dismayed to find herself in economy class, separated from Aki and Saki who claim to be traveling separately. She is bombarded by curious children, and during the flight, the crucial necklace is stolen. Leila rallies the children to become her "knights" to find it. They discover a young marquis's son wearing the necklace. When confronted, the boy's mother claims it's a family heirloom. As Leila allows the marquis's son to keep the necklace, the storm outside subsides, confirming Aki and Saki's prophecy about the necklace's power. Leila then uses her royal privilege to distribute snacks to the children, planning to test the necklace's limits once they reach Japan.
Upon landing at Narita Airport, a commotion erupts outside the plane. Suzaku appears, explaining that the marquis and his son were struck by lightning after the necklace was used improperly. Suzaku returns the necklace, warning Leila about the dragon god within and the consequences of losing it. They depart the airport in a modified Countach, heading towards Leila's grandfather's mansion in Sendai.
At the mansion, Leila is reunited with her grandfather, Seiryu, who reveals that Suzaku had betrayed them by allowing Leila to be kidnapped. He explains that her mother may still be alive and that Genbu was sent to protect her. Seiryu clarifies that the Four Gods are meant to cooperate against external threats but are otherwise equal. He suspects Suzaku's motives are more complex and that the black-clad men who aided her are not her usual subordinates. Seiryu contacts Suzaku, who reveals she orchestrated the kidnapping to rescue her captured subordinates and plans to exchange them for Leila. Leila agrees to the plan, and they prepare to meet Suzaku.
The narrative concludes with Leila, accompanied by Aki and Saki, preparing to meet Suzaku. She dons an outfit to match Suzaku's style. The plan is to meet Suzaku, who will escort Leila to Kobe to exchange her for Suzaku's captured subordinates, with Seiryu and Byakko planning to intercept the kidnappers.
