The story begins with the protagonist, Akame, a self-proclaimed "lucky woman," securing a highly sought-after spot in the new full-dive VRMMO, "To The World Road" (T2W). The game boasts an expansive world, diverse races and classes, and a focus on PvE content, with player-killing (PK) discouraged. Akame, a dedicated gamer aiming to become a top player, has thoroughly prepared for the game's launch, including taking time off work and stocking up on supplies.
Upon logging in, Akame creates her avatar: a tall, sharp-eyed Dragonian with black hair, red eyes, and a tail. She chooses the "Gunner" class, a powerful but potentially high-risk/high-reward choice known for its high damage and accuracy in the beta test, though it becomes weaker in later stages without proper equipment. Her stat distribution prioritizes Dexterity (DEX) and Agility (AGI) for accuracy and evasion, with Strength (STR) for equipment requirements.
Akame's initial experience is immediately challenging. She discovers that unlike in the beta, ammunition is not readily available for purchase in the starting town, Elstan. This forces her to rely on her "Crafting" skill to attempt to create her own ammunition. Her attempts to craft gunpowder and bullets prove difficult, leading to repeated failures and the creation of "trash" items. She also attempts to use her gun as a melee weapon by attaching a knife, but this proves ineffective due to incorrect usage and the lack of proper attachment points.
Her struggles with the Gunner class, particularly the inability to acquire ammunition and the weapon's reliance on specific combat styles, lead to multiple deaths and significant experience loss due to the game's death penalty. Observing other players and reviewing game data, Akame realizes the Gunner class is extremely specialized and difficult to play effectively without proper preparation and understanding of its mechanics. She learns that ammunition is a non-consumable item in the game, meaning it cannot be bought from shops and must be crafted or found.
Akame decides to pivot her strategy. Recognizing the difficulty of her chosen path as a Gunner, she begins to learn crafting skills like Woodworking, Blacksmithing, and Alchemy. Her goal is to eventually craft her own ammunition and gun parts, effectively becoming a "Gunsmith" rather than just a Gunner. She starts by gathering wood to create charcoal, a component for gunpowder, and learns that crafting skills level up through repeated creation rather than point allocation. Despite initial setbacks and the creation of useless "trash" items, Akame remains determined to overcome the game's challenges through her own efforts, embracing the difficulty as a way to further engage with the game. She also notes the game's detailed systems, such as the quality of crafted items and the user-friendly interface for gathering materials.
