The story begins with Ryuya, a fourteen-year-old orphan, undergoing the Blessing Ceremony, a ritual where individuals receive a divine skill upon reaching adulthood. To Ryuya's despair, he is declared "Skillless," meaning he received no divine gift, a fate that condemns him to a life of poverty and insignificance in a world where skills dictate one's worth and future. His childhood friends, however, receive exceptional skills: Libel is destined to become a hero, Zetta gains two rare holy skills, and Kridoroad is blessed with the supreme magical aptitude of "Great Sage's Aptitude." They quickly abandon Ryuya, viewing him as a relic of their past life and a burden.
Cast out of the church and scorned by his former friends and the priest, Ryuya is told that "Skillless" individuals often attempt to level up by fighting monsters but inevitably perish. Despite this grim prognosis, Ryuya resolves to defy his fate by relying on his own strength and determination. He ventures into the wilderness, but his initial attempts to hunt even the weakest monsters prove futile, leaving him injured and on the brink of death.
Just as he resigns himself to his fate, Ryuya encounters a colossal blue dragon, which he initially mistakes for a dragon but is corrected; it is a "Ryu," a being of immense power. The Ryu, named Oonamunushi, offers to train Ryuya, seeing his unique destiny. For five years, Ryuya undergoes brutal training, pushing his body and spirit to their limits. He survives countless near-death experiences, his physical abilities growing exponentially.
Upon completing his training, Ryuya discovers his level has reached an astonishing 8,347,917, far exceeding the normal human limit of 99. He returns to the city and, with the help of a kind Guild Master named Rondowait, registers as an adventurer. During this process, he meets Noem, a young girl who was kidnapped due to her rare "Alchemist King" skill. Ryuya, despite his "Skillless" status, protects her and helps her register as well.
Their journey as adventurers begins with a simple herb-gathering quest, where Noem's "Alchemist King" skill proves incredibly potent, allowing her to instinctively identify rare herbs and even produce "Upper Herbs" not native to the region. Ryuya, too, demonstrates exceptional skill in herb gathering, surpassing even experienced adventurers due to his survival experience.
Their first true challenge arises when they are led by Rondowait into the dangerous "Evil Spirit Zone" for training. Here, they encounter a group of arrogant adventurers who mock Ryuya for being "Skillless" and attempt to steal Noem. Ryuya, now immensely powerful, easily defeats them, shattering their bones and incapacitating them. Rondowait, impressed by Ryuya's strength and Noem's potential, allows them to join the Adventurer's Guild, albeit at the lowest rank. The narrative ends with Ryuya and Noem embarking on their first official quests, ready to face the world with Ryuya's raw power and Noem's extraordinary skill.
