The story begins with Kler, the eldest son of the Asgard family, who inexplicably gains ice magic powers from a monster he's never seen before. He's a mercenary at the local guild, but struggles to learn any "techniques," a fundamental skill in this world where martial prowess is paramount. He's constantly belittled by his guild leader, Regza, a burly, bald man with an axe, and his fellow guild members. Kler is also the adopted brother of Miria, the sole daughter of the noble Telemius family.
After a particularly harsh training session where Regza's powerful "Full Charge Pound" technique sends Kler flying into a wall, he wakes up at home, tended to by Miria and the family doctor, Zenon. Miria expresses concern for Kler and resentment towards Regza for bullying him. Kler, however, feels like a pet to Miria, a burden to the Telemius family who took him in after his parents died in a war. He's been working at the guild for two years without any clients or success, a fact that deeply frustrates him. Miria suggests he quit the guild and help her father, but Kler refuses, stating he owes his guild position to the Count.
The next day, Kler returns to the guild to find it empty. Regza explains that an emergency summons has sent everyone out, leaving him as the "caretaker." To Kler's surprise, Regza assigns him a task: to hunt a "Great Sleeping Rabbit" in Vizend Cave for his adoptive father, Count Garnold Telemius. Kler feels insulted, believing the Count and Regza are mocking his incompetence by giving him such a seemingly simple, yet demeaning, task.
Kler heads to Vizend Cave, battling weak monsters along the way, but his frustration mounts as he struggles to even defeat a slime, unable to utilize any "techniques" despite being born in a world where everyone possesses them. He's injured but perseveres, eventually reaching the cave's deepest part. There, he finds the Great Sleeping Rabbit, but before he can act, he witnesses a monstrous, spider-like creature devouring something. Terrified, Kler attempts to fight the creature, but it brutally dismembers him, severing his right arm and spilling his organs.
As he's about to be eaten, Kler instinctively strikes the creature with his sword. To his astonishment, the creature emits a blinding light and vanishes. Kler discovers a book nearby, and upon opening it, a surge of power flows into him. His severed arm regenerates, and his wounds heal. He realizes he has gained "Ice Magic," a divine power from a fairy tale. He tests his newfound abilities by freezing the awakened Great Sleeping Rabbit mid-leap with a single word, "Freeze." Overwhelmed by this "godly power," Kler laughs maniacally, declaring this the beginning of his "revenge" and "world conquest."
The narrative then shifts to Lyra, a young girl working at a charcoal shop in a perpetually frozen world called "Asgard." She helps her uncle, Gad, process large chunks of charcoal for heating. Lyra possesses a "technique" related to charcoal processing, which is highly praised. She uses a small, emblazoned knife and hammer, implying a connection to the world's "techniques" and "engravers." Lyra dreams of using her skills to help the world and works diligently, despite her occasional clumsiness. She also expresses a desire for a new hammer with a better crest.
Kler, now wielding immense power, leaves Vizend Cave, contemplating his newfound abilities. He collects the Great Sleeping Rabbit's fur as per the original (now irrelevant) request and tests his magic on a flying crow, freezing it mid-air. He then visits a craftsman named Bucka to have a rare item, the "Violet Wendy," processed. When Bucka demands an exorbitant fee, Kler uses his magic to subtly control Bucka's mind, forcing him to comply. Kler plans to use his powers to gradually take over and manipulate those around him, starting with his adoptive family and the guild.
Kler returns to the guild and reports the successful completion of his task to Regza, who is still suffering from Kler's ice magic. Kler freezes Regza's arm, intending to cripple him, but stops when he sees Miria outside. He then uses his magic to erase Regza's memory of the event and forces him to let Miria take Kler home. Kler contemplates using his magic to uncover Miria's true feelings for him, suspecting she might pity him.
Back at the Telemius mansion, Kler gives Miria the "Violet Wendy" as a gift. He then invites her to his room, intending to use his magic to discover her true feelings. He uses his magic to make her confess her long-held love for him, which he reciprocates by embracing her. He then uses his magic to induce a pleasant dream in her and places her in her own room, satisfied that he has "obtained" her.
The next morning, Kler, now accustomed to his powers, receives breakfast from Shira, a maid who also looks down on him. He plans to use his magic to subtly reveal his growing power, making it seem like a new "technique" rather than forbidden magic. He then confronts Shira, using his ice magic to paralyze and humiliate her, asserting his dominance. He plans to use her as a toy.
Kler then goes to a street vendor and acquires a curved sword, a "scimitar," which he imbues with his magic. He heads to the guild, where his colleagues, led by Glad, mock him. Kler challenges Glad to a duel, using his magic to create illusions and manipulate the fight, making it appear as if he's using a new, powerful "technique" called "Darkness" and "Spinning Disaster," while actually controlling Glad's perception and movements. Kler relishes the fear and confusion he instills in his former tormentors, vowing to conquer the world.
