The story begins with Yukito Shin, a high school student, walking alone at night, reflecting on his miserable life. He feels alienated from his family, who are either verbally abusive or indifferent, and struggles with social anxiety and bullying at school. Despite his efforts to change his persona in high school, he finds himself ostracized and subjected to subtle, psychological torment by his peers. He contemplates his bleak future, but finds a sliver of hope in the eventual possibility of independence after turning eighteen. While walking, he is suddenly struck by a truck, losing consciousness.
Shin awakens in a different world, a royal castle in the kingdom of Zeela. He is greeted by a king and his sage, Freamel, who believe him to be the summoned hero destined to save their kingdom. Initially disbelieving, Shin is convinced by Freamel's demonstration of magic. However, when he checks his "status," a system that displays personal abilities, he discovers he is not a hero but labeled an "bully." The king, disappointed, explains that they cannot send him back and provides him with a small sum of money and commoner status, effectively exiling him.
Penniless and with no skills, Shin struggles to find work. He is advised by a kind innkeeper to register with the Adventurer's Guild. Upon registration, he learns that without combat skills, his options are limited to menial tasks. He takes on two such jobs: cleaning sewers and gardening, earning enough for a few days' lodging. During the sewer cleaning, he meets another adventurer who reveals his own peculiar skill, "Cheeks Stretch," and encourages Shin to persevere.
Shin's life takes a turn for the worse when he is caught in a brawl between two adventurers at the guild. He is severely injured, breaking his leg, and the perpetrators are arrested. With no means to pay for medical treatment or his lodging, he is forced to move to the slums. There, he is robbed and beaten by slum dwellers. Miraculously, he survives and is found by a slave merchant named Crocker, who buys him, recognizing his unique "bully" status as potentially valuable to collectors.
Crocker's treatment is surprisingly lenient. He releases Shin from confinement, assigning him simple tasks like delivering food and cleaning the merchant hall. Shin's disciplined nature, a result of his Japanese education, makes him a more manageable "slave" than others. He is then purchased by Aurora Paris, a beautiful and renowned adventurer. Aurora, seeking a loyal companion, sees potential in Shin, despite his lack of combat prowess. She begins a brutal training regimen, using healing magic to constantly revive him after breaking his bones, pushing him to develop his skills, particularly his "Endure" and "Rage" abilities, which he discovers can be combined to inflict damage.
Aurora eventually deems Shin ready for practical experience and sends him into a low-level dungeon, "The Labyrinth of Normalcy," with the goal of reaching the tenth floor. He faces various monsters, including a rare High Slime, which he defeats using his combined skills, leveling up significantly. Later, he encounters a Black Goblin Shaman, a much more dangerous creature than typically found in the labyrinth. Despite the intense combat and the risk of severe injury, Shin manages to defeat it by strategically using his "Endure" and "Rage" skills, surprising Aurora with his progress and the unusual monsters he encounters. Aurora notes the anomaly of these rare monsters appearing and suspects something is amiss with the labyrinth itself.
