The story follows Rudin, a four-year-old boy who, upon seeing a monster carcass, suddenly regains the memories of his past life as Akihisa Kuze, an eighteen-year-old who died from illness. He remembers his passion for the online game "Dragon & Magic Online." Initially excited by the prospect of reincarnation, Rudin, believing he'd possess cheat abilities like many light novel protagonists, checks his status. To his dismay, he's Level 0 with abysmal stats and no skills. He briefly considers his high MP and decent Intelligence and Spirit as a potential cheat, but quickly realizes his stats are comparable to other children his age, and adults have significantly higher ones.
Disappointed but resilient, Rudin accepts his fate as an ordinary villager and focuses on learning magic, a concept he knows exists in this world. He discovers that magic requires circulating MP and reciting spells. His first attempt at an offensive spell, "Magic Missile," fails due to his poor pronunciation as a four-year-old. He then tries the healing spell "Cure," which, after practicing pronunciation, successfully heals a scraped knee. However, after a subsequent fall, he finds that repeated casting of "Cure" drains his MP, and he can only heal minor injuries. He learns that MP recovers over time by resting or staying still, and that magic requires both spellcasting and MP circulation. He dedicates himself to practicing magic, specifically "Cure" and "Light," to improve his healing and offensive magic capabilities, respectively.
Rudin's family consists of his parents, Hans (Level 13 Warrior) and Sheila (Level 11 Hunter), and five older siblings: Hilda (Level 6 Warrior, Level 2 Hunter), Dick (apprentice swordsman), Theodore (apprentice swordsman), Rhea (no job yet), and Carina (7 years old). They live in Granril village, part of the Atlanazia Empire, a place where everyone learns to defend themselves due to the nearby monster-infested forest. Hilda is exceptionally talented, already possessing two jobs at 15. Rudin uses his family's minor injuries and skin irritations as practice for his "Cure" spell. He also practices "Light" magic, aiming to improve his magical prowess, believing his higher Intelligence suggests a leaning towards mage-type magic.
Rudin dedicates himself to learning, studying diligently to improve his Intelligence, and reading books from the village library, which is surprisingly well-stocked. He quickly becomes literate and develops advanced calculation skills, which he keeps secret. He also attempts to leverage his past life knowledge for "cheat" abilities, first considering economic or agricultural improvements, but realizes his limitations as a child. He then turns to culinary knowledge, hoping to introduce dishes like curry or chocolate, but finds the necessary ingredients are unavailable or unknown. His final hope, mayonnaise, is dashed when he discovers the world uses animal fat instead of vegetable oil.
Four years pass, and Rudin is now seven, about to turn eight. He has continued his magic practice, though he still lacks a general job. His stats have improved, surpassing Carina's at her age, but she has acquired the Apprentice Priest general job, while he has not. Carina, initially interested in magic out of boredom, struggles with MP circulation, but Rudin helps her learn through practice and by consulting magic books. They discover that magic spells in this world are the same as in "Dragon & Magic Online," but the world itself differs significantly. Rudin also begins crafting magic tools, starting with simple ones like a windless windmill and a cart-style grass mower, which becomes popular in the village.
Hilda marries and becomes a mother. Dick and Theodore gain Warrior jobs. Rhea gains a Hunter job, and Carina acquires Apprentice Priest and Apprentice Hunter general jobs. Rudin, still without a general job, feels a lack of talent but continues to practice. On his eighth birthday, his father gives him a short sword, a traditional gift for boys in the village as they can begin weapon training at this age. Excited for this new path, Rudin's morning routine of practicing "Light" magic results in an unexpectedly powerful burst of light, surpassing even the morning sun.
