The story begins with the protagonist, who has reincarnated as Rest Albion, the fourth son of a noble family in the world of the game "Sword and Magic Symphonia." Rest retains his memories from his previous life as a player and knows that his character, Rest, is destined to be a tragic figure, ultimately killed by the Demon Lord's forces. His primary motivation is to survive and become the strongest to avert this fate. This is made more urgent by the fact that his unique "Tame" skill, which allows him to control monsters, has already attracted the attention of the Demon Lord's army.
Upon regaining his memories during the "Oracle's Ceremony" at age 14, Rest is ostracized by his family due to his seemingly useless "Tame" skill, a situation mirroring the game's narrative. However, Rest knows the true potential of his skill and plans to exploit his game knowledge to become overwhelmingly powerful. He begins a rigorous training regimen, combining the game's "Midnight Training" system with his own devised methods to rapidly increase his physical abilities and magic power.
After about a week of intense training, Rest's physical stats show noticeable improvement. His twin brothers, Edward and Sidward, who possess combat-oriented skills, mock his efforts. Despite their scorn, Rest seeks out Elna Briesel, a renowned S-rank adventurer and genius swordswoman who occasionally trains at the Albion estate. Initially dismissive due to Rest's lack of combat skills, Elna is eventually impressed by his determination and agrees to give him 30 minutes of sword instruction after her sessions with his brothers.
Two months into his training, Rest has significantly improved his swordsmanship under Elna's tutelage, even rivaling his brothers. During one of Elna's lessons, the Second Princess of the Finale Kingdom, Charlotte von Finale, one of the game's main heroines, arrives. Charlotte, who also trains with Elna, is intrigued by the mention of a talented swordsman at the Albion estate. While Rest's brothers are eager to impress the princess, Rest, recognizing her as a potential threat to his survival, tries to distance himself. However, his brothers' arrogance and a subsequent monster attack in the nearby "Arst Forest" force his hand.
Edward and Sidward, attempting to show off for Charlotte, lead her into the forest, a place forbidden to them before attending the Royal Academy. They are attacked by a pack of Gray Wolves, which they manage to defeat, but their performance disappoints Charlotte. The situation escalates when two Gale Wolves, dangerous C-rank monsters, appear. While Elna's bodyguard, Ester, attempts to hold one off, the brothers freeze in fear, leaving Charlotte vulnerable. Rest, who had been secretly observing, intervenes, defeating the Gale Wolf with his wooden sword.
Charlotte, recognizing the wooden sword as one given by Elna, deduces Rest's identity. Despite his attempt to pass himself off as a mere passerby, Charlotte is convinced he is the talented individual Elna spoke of. With the Gale Wolf defeated, Rest uses his "Tame" skill to subdue and befriend it, gaining its wind magic ability and new skills like "Shrinkage" and "Spatial Dwelling." He names the wolf "Garel." He then helps Charlotte and Ester carry the unconscious Edward and Sidward back to the estate, having successfully taken the first step in his plan to become the strongest.
