The story follows Maruka Perusha, the fifteen-year-old third daughter of a minor baron. She lives in a household dominated by her cruel biological sister, Meltia, and her meek, abused step-sister, Liliiane. Maruka, who prefers reading to social interaction, finds herself constantly dealing with Meltia's tantrums and the resulting damage to property and Liliiane's well-being. Liliiane, orphaned five years prior and further marginalized after her father's death two years ago, is forced into menial tasks and wears worn-out clothes. Maruka, despite her reserved nature, shows kindness by giving Liliiane a handkerchief and advising her to change her tea-stained dress.
Maruka's true role in the household is far from that of a simple young lady. She is secretly managing the Perusha baronet's business affairs, a responsibility entrusted to her by her late adoptive father, Baron Perusha. She met him in a library when she was a commoner, and he adopted her with the condition that she and her mother and sister would be brought into the family. Maruka's mother and Meltia are unaware of the true nature of this arrangement, believing the Baron was infatuated with Maruka's mother. Maruka's primary motivation is to fulfill her contract with her adoptive father, which involves managing the estate until she comes of age at sixteen and becomes the official head of the household. She also aims to prevent her mother from bringing other men into the house and to protect Liliiane from her mother and Meltia's abuse.
Liliiane is then arranged to marry the "Monster Duke," a fearsome and ruthless man. Maruka orchestrates this marriage, seeing it as a way to remove Liliiane from her abusive home and entrust her to a powerful individual. She believes the Duke, despite his reputation, is a suitable match due to his wealth, power, intellect, strength, and good looks, and that he will protect Liliiane. The Duke, Albert von Gaiaron, is intrigued by Liliiane's plight and agrees to the marriage, unaware of Maruka's manipulation.
The narrative then shifts to Liliiane's new life with the Duke. Despite his fearsome reputation, Albert is shown to be deeply caring towards Liliiane, who is frail and has been traumatized by her past. Their relationship deepens, and Liliiane begins to blossom under his care. Meanwhile, Maruka continues to manage the baronet's finances, which are now thriving thanks to her innovative communication business. She operates under a pseudonym to prevent her mother and Meltia from squandering the wealth.
A significant turning point occurs during Maruka's sixteenth birthday party. The party is disrupted when Meltia and their mother, driven by jealousy of Liliiane's newfound happiness and appearance, confront Liliiane in the greenhouse. They destroy a precious music box that belonged to Liliiane's mother. The Duke, alerted to the situation, intervenes with his knights. During the confrontation, Maruka's secrets are revealed: her adoptive father's debts, her secret management of the estate, and her role in orchestrating Liliiane's marriage. The Duke, initially believing Maruka to be a traitor due to a misunderstanding involving Liliiane's maid, Ami, eventually learns the truth about Maruka's efforts to protect Liliiane and the family.
It is revealed that Maruka's mother and Meltia were responsible for her adoptive father's death, disguised as an accident. Liliiane, who witnessed this, chose to burn the evidence to protect Maruka, who was then tasked with taking over the family's responsibilities. The Duke, after uncovering the truth and with Liliiane's confession, decides to punish Maruka's mother and Meltia for their crimes.
In the aftermath, Maruka's mother and Meltia are arrested. Liliiane, finally free from her tormentors and understanding Maruka's sacrifices, reconciles with her. Maruka, now the official head of the Perusha baronetcy, continues to manage her businesses, with the support of Ami and her trusted butler, Sebastian. The story concludes with Maruka facing the consequences of her actions and the complex relationships within her family, while also hinting at a potential romantic development with Ricardo, the Vice Captain of the Royal Knights, who has been appointed as her personal guard. Ricardo, initially drawn to Liliiane, realizes his feelings for Maruka and vows to protect her, recognizing her immense strength and sacrifices.
