The protagonist, who is referred to as "Nightmare" by the magical girls but denies this moniker, is a powerful being aiming to conquer Earth. Chapters 3-12 detail his escalating conflicts with three magical girls: Pink (Rio Sakurai), Red (Chisa Takamiya), and Blue (Sumire Kokonoe).
The narrative begins with the protagonist confronting the magical girls in the sky. He initially gains the upper hand, easily repelling their individual attacks. However, the magical girls quickly resort to their combined ultimate attack, "Super Smile Splash," which defeats him. This marks a recurring pattern: the protagonist's initial dominance followed by his defeat by the combined attack, often perceived as occurring earlier in battles than in his past experiences.
Following his defeat, the protagonist attends school, revealing that he is a student and knows the magical girls' civilian identities. He harbors a strong desire for world conquest, viewing his classmates as oblivious to their impending doom. He reiterates his goal of conquering Earth on April 7th, the day of the school entrance ceremony. He clashes with the magical girls again, asserting his superiority and distinct nature, not being a "Desugon" (a type of evil entity that possesses weak-willed humans) nor a mere human, but a "perfectly evolved being" destined to be king. Despite his initial advantage in this second encounter, the magical girls again use their "Super Smile Splash" to defeat him.
A month passes, and the protagonist, now attending school as Shota Uno, finds himself unable to defeat the magical girls due to their protective abilities. He continues to challenge them, but his defeats persist. He discovers that the magical girls' powers are linked to their mental state, particularly their ability to perform their combined attack. He overhears Rio Sakurai apologizing for her poor performance, revealing that her mental state affects her magic. This insight becomes his key to victory.
The protagonist's school life becomes intertwined with his quest. He is reluctantly appointed as class representative, a role he sees as fitting for a future king. He also takes on a part-time job at a cafe, where he interacts with his understanding owner and learns about the value of "unconditional" relationships, though he remains skeptical.
His strategy shifts to exploiting the magical girls' mental vulnerabilities. He learns that their combined attack fails if even one member cannot use magic. During one battle, the fairy guiding the magical girls intervenes, temporarily granting Rio the ability to use magic, thus enabling their combined attack and leading to another defeat for the protagonist. However, this battle confirms his theory about the combined attack's mechanics.
Following a particularly brutal defeat, the protagonist is found injured by Rio Sakurai. Despite his animosity, she insists on taking him to her home to treat his wounds. He suspects a trap but is forcibly brought inside. While attempting to escape, he encounters Rio's father, who apprehends him. The protagonist finds himself in an unexpected situation, brought to their living room, his plan for conquest momentarily thwarted.
