The story begins with the protagonist, Renji, a VR game novice, finding himself in a disadvantageous position. His friend Naosuke, who invited him to the game, had insisted Renji choose the "Long-Range Physical" class and use a bow. However, upon entering the game, Renji discovers he's the only one with a bow, and others seem to mock him for it. He suspects he's been set up and heads to their meeting spot in the southern part of the city to confront Naosuke.
Renji recalls Naosuke's unusual behavior: giving him a beta test software despite its rarity, and dictating Renji's character build (race, class, skills, stats) against Naosuke's usual liberal approach. Reaching the city's southern outskirts, Renji finds Naosuke, who introduces himself as "Nao" in-game. Nao explains that "Long-Range Physical" is considered a weak class because its skills are less effective and require real-world aiming skill, unlike "Long-Range Magic" which is guaranteed to hit. He reveals that the southern area of the starting plains is populated by "Grass Rabbits" that flee from players, and that this information is widely known, deterring others from coming there.
Nao then presents Renji with a special bow that deals fixed damage, capable of defeating the low-HP Grass Rabbits in one hit. He explains the mechanics: Grass Rabbits activate and flee at 50m, while the effective range of "Long-Range Magic" is 48m and "Long-Range Physical" is 47m. This means Renji needs to shoot from beyond 50m. Despite his real-world archery experience, Renji struggles with the game's short bow, missing his first few shots. However, after about twelve attempts, he successfully hits a Grass Rabbit, leveling up and earning the title "First Slayer (Southern Starting City)." He also receives a "Skill Level Limit Increase Ticket."
Nao explains the "Recovery" skill, which increases drop rates and automatically collects thrown weapons, mitigating Renji's arrow consumption. Renji, grateful for the software and Nao's help, learns that Nao's motivation was purely intellectual curiosity: to see if "Long-Range Physical" could be viable with real-world skill. Nao then departs to focus on his own start.
Renji, now level 2, dedicates his stat points to Dexterity (DEX) and Agility (AGI), and levels up his "Recovery" skill. He continues hunting Grass Rabbits, efficiently leveling up. He then encounters another player, a fox-like demi-human named Reina, who is also using a bow but with significantly higher damage output. They discover a shared interest in the underappreciated "Long-Range Physical" class and decide to team up.
Reina, who is highly knowledgeable about the game, suggests they tackle the field boss, a "Big Grass Rabbit," despite their low levels. Renji expresses concern about the difficulty, but Reina insists. They decide to level up first. During their leveling, Renji learns about the "Shock" skill, a derivative of "Shooting," which he wants to acquire. They also learn that the southern starting area has a significantly higher recommended level (30) for the next field compared to other areas (10).
After leveling up and acquiring more arrows, they proceed to the next field, the "Abyssal Forest." They encounter a "Little Spider" and a pack of wolves. Renji acts as a decoy, allowing Reina to land hits. They defeat the spider, earning another "First Slayer" title. However, they are quickly overwhelmed by the wolves, resulting in their deaths.
They respawn and head to the Adventurer's Guild to complete quests and buy more arrows. Reina, driven by her goal to improve the perception of "Long-Range Physical" classes, intervenes when other players mock a girl with a bow. Renji, initially hesitant, decides to help Reina, displaying his numerous titles to deter the bullies. A powerful player named Rutto, a former clan master, offers Renji a spot in his clan, "Shunko," but Renji declines, preferring a more casual playstyle.
Renji and Reina then decide to venture back into the Abyssal Forest. They face another Little Spider, and this time, with better coordination and Renji's increased AGI and new "Stealth" skill, they manage to defeat it. However, upon defeating the spider, they are immediately attacked by wolves. They die again and return to the Guild.
Renji, now level 9 with many titles, and Reina, level 16, decide to focus on leveling and preparing for the next field. Renji buys a new bow and arrows. He also realizes the potential of using the game's AI to pit different monster species against each other, a strategy he plans to implement. He logs back in, finds Reina's level has increased, and they head to the next field.
