The narrative begins with Father Cross being summarily expelled from the Holy Church by Bishop Bertol. Despite his colleagues' positive assessments of his character, diligence, and compassion, Cross is accused of being from the "Evil God's Town" and possessing "Evil God's Blood," marking him as a "tainted being" and a blasphemer. He is a half-demon, a fact he concealed to pursue his desire to help people with his magic, which he deliberately suppressed to avoid suspicion. Bertol dismisses Cross's pleas of innocence, accusing him of ulterior motives and threatening those who vouched for him. Cross reluctantly accepts his expulsion to protect his allies.
Outside the church, Cross is dejected but is met by the Goddess Eleonore, who is visible and communicative only to him. She expresses outrage at the church's discrimination and offers her support. Cross, having received a meager severance, finds solace in Eleonore's presence. He decides to head to the nearest large city, intending to use his magic to continue helping people. Eleonore suggests he become an adventurer, highlighting the freedom and potential for wealth.
En route to the city, Cross and Eleonore hear a horse's distress and discover a carriage attacked by bandits. Cross intervenes, effortlessly disarming a bandit leader with his "Light Blade" magic. The bandits, initially dismissive, are shocked by his power. Cross then uses "Holy Sphere" to destroy their weapons, causing them to flee. He proceeds to heal the injured knights and horses with "Heal," a high-level light magic. The rescued noble daughter, Nanaria Albert, and her knights are astonished by his abilities and offer him hospitality and introductions, but Cross, eager to avoid further complications, escapes using "Shield Ray."
Cross, now determined to help people discreetly, decides to become an adventurer. He and Eleonore arrive at the Adventurer's Guild in the city. During his registration, Cross reveals he was a priest but was expelled. The receptionist, initially surprised, accepts his application, noting that past issues are irrelevant for adventurers. He receives his adventurer license, marked as "Holy Order" (self-proclaimed).
While browsing quests, Cross is approached by Merlet, a "Gunner," who, along with her companions Jessica (a "Swordsman") and Myun (a "Brawler"), invites him to join their F-rank party. They desperately need a support and healer. Jessica is immediately suspicious of Cross due to his past and gender, but Myun's pragmatic intervention and Merlet's earnest pleas convince Cross to join. Their first mission is to capture a large spider monster, a Gargantua, near a village.
During the mission, Merlet is overly protective of Cross, while Jessica remains wary. When a second Gargantua appears, Merlet rushes to defend Cross, but a third emerges from the ground, critically wounding her. Cross swiftly defeats the first two Gargantuas with his magic and then uses a devastating combination of "Holy Sphere" and "Light Blade" to destroy the third from within. He then heals Merlet, who is deeply grateful. However, they realize they've killed all three Gargantuas, failing the capture objective. Despite this, Merlet insists Cross remain part of their party, solidifying their bond.
The next morning, Cross practices meditation. Myun challenges him to a spar, and Cross, after initially holding back, reveals his true combat prowess, defeating her. He encourages Myun to embrace her full strength, which she had suppressed due to societal pressures. Jessica, witnessing this, begins to soften her stance towards Cross after he reveals his past as a noble's child whose family fell due to his father's religious fanaticism. She apologizes for her prejudice and expresses respect for him.
The party reports their mission to the Guild. Their success in defeating the Gargantuas, especially the revelation of a "Mother" monster and the recovery of its massive "Magic Stone," earns them significant recognition and respect, silencing their detractors. The villagers, grateful for the rescue of those captured by the Gargantuas, offer them lodging.
Later, during a celebratory meal, Myun inquires about Cross's ability to speak with Eleonore. Jessica, now more accepting, reveals Cross's divine connection. The party expresses their gratitude to Cross for their newfound success and confidence, acknowledging how he helped them overcome their personal struggles. Cross, in turn, expresses his desire to continue helping people discreetly.
Meanwhile, Bishop Bertol, having expelled Cross, is informed by a Guild representative that Cross is achieving remarkable success as an adventurer, prompting an investigation into his background. Bertol, who orchestrated Cross's expulsion to curb his growing influence, is taken aback by this news.
