Agnes, mocked as a plain lady in high society, happens to save Duke Nazelbert, whose engagement was broken off by the princess. However, upon witnessing this, the princess orders Nazelbert to marry Agnes as punishment. "Isn't marriage to me too cruel a punishment?" Agnes wonders. "Surely Lord Nazelbert must object... he doesn't?!"
