The protagonist, Nao Bruce, raised in an orphanage, reaches the age to leave and, dreaming of marrying his childhood friend from the same orphanage, resolves to climb the business ladder.

He attempts to enter the university considered crucial for his ambitions but fails, and, seemingly because of this, is betrayed by his childhood friend.

His childhood friend is stolen away by the son of a local dignitary. After enduring truly awful treatment at her hands, he goes to a famous suicide spot intending to end his life. However, he can't bring himself to do it and instead breaks down sobbing right then and there.

At that moment, he spots a military recruitment advertisement. Concluding that if he couldn't end his own life, he would let the enemy do it for him in battle, he decides to enlist.

Unexpectedly, instead of going to the front lines as a mere private, he is catapulted into a school for the nation's military elite, and his life takes a dramatic turn.

However, this stubborn man, who still hasn't given up on dying, develops "chuunibyou" (eighth-grade syndrome) at the officer academy, and his delusions grow increasingly entrenched.

Consequently, he increasingly draws those around him into his orbit, and the commotion steadily escalates.
