At the academy's graduation ceremony, Victoria was suddenly informed by the Crown Prince that their engagement was annulled.
Yet, Victoria showed not the slightest concern, no matter how much she was reproached.
What could be the reason?
The story begins at the graduation ceremony of Platinum Academy, a prestigious educational institution in the Kingdom of Plast. Prince Bernhard, the Crown Prince, publicly declares his engagement to Theresia Sassen, a count's daughter, breaking his engagement with Duchess Reikart's daughter, Victoria Reikart. Bernhard accuses Victoria of harassing Theresia, citing incidents like torn textbooks, damaged uniforms, and being pushed down the stairs. Victoria, a noblewoman of higher standing, denies these accusations, believing Theresia's tears and fear are an act. She also points out Bernhard's own shortcomings, such as his lack of popularity with the populace and his past indulgence in card games during a national food shortage. Victoria calmly accepts the annulment, much to Bernhard's surprise and Theresia's delight, who makes a triumphant gesture. Victoria reveals that her engagement was a duty, not a desire for the throne, and that Bernhard never held romantic feelings for her either. She notes that the annulment, announced publicly, will quickly spread throughout the neighboring countries.
Two weeks later, Bernhard and Theresia visit the royal palace to request that Queen Yunoa begin Theresia's queenly education. Bernhard believes his mother will agree, as she had previously educated Victoria. However, they are informed that the Queen cannot see them. To Bernhard's shock, Victoria is then seen entering the Queen's chambers. Bernhard confronts the guard, demanding an explanation, but is interrupted by his younger brother, Alexis, who questions his aggressive behavior in the royal quarters. Alexis intervenes, preventing Bernhard from drawing his sword and escorting him away, promising to arrange a meeting with the Queen.
Inside the Queen's chambers, Victoria is present with Queen Yunoa. When Bernhard and Theresia finally enter, the Queen questions Bernhard about his visit. Bernhard states his intention to have Theresia educated as a future queen. The Queen, however, questions Theresia's eligibility to become the Queen of Plast, implying she is not suitable. Theresia vehemently asserts her desire to marry Bernhard and lead the country to happiness, while Bernhard is moved by her words. Victoria, observing this, realizes Bernhard's ignorance of the kingdom's political situation.
The Queen then reveals a crucial piece of information: Bernhard will not inherit the throne. This shocks Theresia, who immediately begins calculating her future status as a duchess. The Queen further explains that due to the incident that caused instability in the alliance between Plast and the powerful Kingdom of Nanbal, Theresia will be stripped of her noble title and live as a commoner after marrying Bernhard.
Victoria then steps in to explain the geopolitical situation to Theresia. She reveals that the alliance between Plast and Nanbal was solidified 75 years ago when a Nanbal princess married a Plast count and was granted the title of Duke Reikart. Victoria herself is a descendant of this union, making her the rightful candidate for marriage to the Plast heir to strengthen the alliance. Theresia is stunned, realizing she has inadvertently challenged Nanbal royalty.
Bernhard, still clinging to the belief that he is favored by the Nanbal King, tries to convince the Queen that he is suitable to rule. Victoria corrects him, recalling that the Nanbal King had praised Alexis, not Bernhard, for his potential leadership. She then produces a letter from the Nanbal King, addressed to her. The letter, confirmed by Alexis and the Queen, announces the engagement between Victoria Reikart and Alexis Plast, and the immediate abdication of Crown Prince Bernhard.
Bernhard is devastated, collapsing in despair. Theresia, concerned about her own future, is informed by the Queen that she will live as a commoner. Victoria retrieves the letter from Bernhard, clarifying that she never harbored romantic feelings for him and that her destiny was to be the Queen of Plast, a duty she accepted from birth. She concludes by telling Theresia that she had no reason to bully her, as she was never a rival for Bernhard's affection or the throne.
