The narrative follows Akane, a high school student who has a childhood friend and boyfriend named Kaisei. Their relationship, which began after Akane confessed her feelings at the end of middle school, has been a source of happiness for her. However, upon entering high school, Akane became self-conscious and started treating Kaisei coldly. In an attempt to test his feelings, she jokingly broke up with him, fabricating a story about a senior confessing to her and telling him she only dated him for convenience. She immediately left, expecting him to come to her house the next day as usual.
When Kaisei doesn't appear, Akane grows anxious and visits his home. His mother informs her that Kaisei is staying at a friend's house and doesn't provide further details, which fuels Akane's suspicion and jealousy. The following days are filled with Akane's growing unease as Kaisei remains absent. She looks forward to seeing him at school on Monday, hoping to reconcile and spend time together.
At school, Akane's friend Haruna notices her unusually cheerful demeanor. Kaisei arrives late, and Akane attempts to invite him for crepes. Kaisei, however, confronts her about the breakup, stating he believed her and has found a new girlfriend. Akane tries to explain it was a joke, but Kaisei is deeply hurt and angry, telling her he wants nothing to do with her and never wants to see her face again. This harsh rejection leaves Akane devastated and scared.
The next day, Akane is too afraid to speak to Kaisei, and he doesn't bring her lunch as he usually does. Haruna inquires about their fight, and Akane admits it was a breakup. Haruna expresses surprise, noting Kaisei's popularity among female students and advising Akane to reconcile quickly, jokingly suggesting she might "take him" if they break up. Akane dismisses the idea of Kaisei being unfaithful, believing he truly loves her.
Akane tries to approach Kaisei after school, but he coldly rejects her again, reiterating his desire to not be involved with her. She cries and pleads, but he leaves without looking back. Distraught, Akane confides in Haruna, who tells her she was in the wrong for her actions and that Kaisei has every right to move on. Haruna suggests Akane should give up on Kaisei. However, Akane refuses to accept this, convinced Kaisei is being deceived by another girl. She rushes to Kaisei's house, only to learn from his mother that he is staying at his girlfriend's house.
Akane becomes increasingly convinced Kaisei is being manipulated. She returns home, neglecting her own well-being, and falls ill with a high fever, attributing it to her poor diet since Kaisei stopped visiting. Determined to "save" Kaisei, she resolves to get him back.
The following week, Akane returns to school, still unwell but driven by her obsession. She observes Kaisei acting strangely, constantly smiling. She follows him after school and witnesses him meeting a girl named Shion Fujine, the student council president, whom she immediately labels the "thief cat." Kaisei introduces Shion as his girlfriend, and when Akane protests, he firmly rejects her, stating he has no intention of breaking up with Shion and wants nothing more to do with Akane. He leaves with Shion, leaving Akane heartbroken and in disbelief.
Consumed by despair, Akane isolates herself for a week. She regrets her actions but remains convinced Shion is manipulating Kaisei. She decides to wait for Shion to graduate next year before making her move, planning to feign apathy at school to avoid suspicion. She vows to get Kaisei back, no matter the cost.
