The story begins with a young, pink-haired girl fleeing through the city's back alleys, pursued by soldiers. Despite her small size and numerous injuries, she is adept at navigating the labyrinthine streets, a skill honed by her life of hardship. However, this time, two pursuers are relentless and seem to know her every move. Just as she believes she has lost them, a boy in a grey robe, Kazami Ayame, blocks her escape with a stone wall conjured by earth magic. Beside him stands a silver-haired woman, who praises Ayame's advanced magic. Ayame, a self-proclaimed "Sage," offers the girl his hand, stating they are there to help her.
The narrative then shifts to Ayame's perspective. He is an eighteen-year-old high school student who finds solace in the city library, a sanctuary filled with books. He developed a passion for reading at thirteen, initially with mystery novels, which later expanded to historical fiction and light novels. This solitary pursuit led to his isolation from classmates, a situation he initially accepted. However, as he approaches graduation, he realizes he is falling behind his peers in academics and lacks any friends.
One day at the library, Ayame discovers an unusual, iris-colored book with an indecipherable script. While examining it, the world around him distorts, and he loses consciousness. He awakens on a plateau, disoriented and realizing he has been transported to another world. He finds the book with him and, upon opening it, discovers he can understand its contents, which detail various magical spells. He experiments with the book, learning to create fire and water using natural mana from a pebble, confirming his transmigration.
Ayame spends the next few days practicing magic, learning to create fire, water, wind, and earth spells, as well as minor healing, by drawing mana from natural objects. He also discovers he cannot activate "Odo," a personal magical energy, suggesting he is not native to this world. He constructs a sturdy wooden house using earth magic for shelter. While foraging, he encounters goblins and uses earth magic to create a massive wall, incapacitating them and allowing him to take their food.
He then travels to the capital city, the "Royal Capital," where he obtains a temporary identification card from a guild that also functions as a government office. He learns about the world's currency and societal structure, encountering various races like beastmen and demons. He is offered work through the guild, choosing to clean the "Fredor's Clock Tower" and assist with road repairs, specifically healing injured children. He also learns that some individuals, like the sisters he works with, have a peculiar affinity for healing young boys due to their "shota-con" tendencies, leading him to focus on healing girls.
Ayame begins spending his days at the Royal Capital's vast library, immersing himself in books. He meets a beautiful silver-haired librarian named Primrose, who offers him food and guidance. He learns about the history of magic, including the development of incantations and magic circles, and the existence of "Sages" who possess extensive knowledge. He also discovers that certain powerful magic is forbidden, and some races, like elves, have different magical affinities. He is intrigued by the concept of Sages and decides to pursue this path, aiming to gather knowledge and potentially find a way back home. He also learns about the diverse genres of literature in this world, including fantasy adventure stories, some of which contain explicit content that he hides from Primrose. He continues to frequent the library, driven by his thirst for knowledge and his growing fascination with Primrose.
