The protagonist, Masachika Takeda, unexpectedly becomes a multi-millionaire after winning a large sum of money from a soccer lottery. Initially overwhelmed and unsure of what to do with the fortune, he confides in his grandfather. His grandfather, a formerly well-off man, reveals a shocking truth about the existence of a "slave market" where people are bought and sold. He suggests that Masachika consider using his newfound wealth to help those in need, hinting at the possibility of purchasing someone.
Intrigued and somewhat disbelieving, Masachika visits a bar recommended by his grandfather. There, he meets a portly man who confirms the existence of the slave market. The man presents Masachika with a list of individuals, each with a price tag. Overwhelmed by the reality of the situation, Masachika struggles to make a decision. He eventually asks to purchase the "most pitiful" child, and the man selects a young girl named Ruri Hasegawa, aged nine.
Masachika brings Ruri back to his modest 1DK apartment. Ruri is initially silent and expressionless, seemingly accustomed to her status as a purchased individual. Masachika, however, is determined to treat her with kindness and help her adjust. He buys her new clothes and attempts to foster communication, which slowly begins to yield results as Ruri starts to speak in hushed tones and eventually cries, revealing her fear of being abandoned. Masachika embraces her, reassuring her that he bought her to make her happy and live a fulfilling life.
The next day, Masachika, who works as a high school teacher, prepares for his day while Ruri stays at home. He decides to enroll Ruri in a local elementary school and contacts his senior colleague, Ms. Takatsu, and a more approachable male colleague, Mr. Akiyama, for assistance. Mr. Akiyama helps Masachika arrange for Ruri's transfer.
Masachika takes Ruri to the elementary school, where they meet her potential homeroom teacher, Ms. Sakai. During the enrollment process, Ms. Sakai notices that Ruri's surname is Hasegawa, while Masachika's is Takeda, and questions their relationship. Masachika awkwardly explains that Ruri is a relative and he accidentally gave his surname earlier. Ms. Sakai, a kind and observant teacher, accepts his explanation. After a tour of the school, Masachika buys Ruri a school backpack.
The following day, Ruri attends her new school. She is introduced as a transfer student and is seated next to a boy named Leo Kanda. Another popular classmate, Hiroto Takahashi, bombards Ruri with questions, making her uncomfortable. Leo intervenes, calming Hiroto and allowing Ruri to settle in. Ruri remains shy and reserved throughout the day, struggling to interact with her classmates.
The narrative concludes with Ruri having started school and Masachika continuing his teaching career, both navigating their new lives together. Ruri is gradually opening up, and Masachika is dedicated to ensuring her happiness and well-being.
