Chapters 3 through 12 of "Tsuji Kasuka" delve into the protagonist, Yuu's, internal struggles and her strained relationship with her mother, Yukari. Yuu is presented as a perfectionist, a trait that deeply troubles her mother. This is illustrated through a conversation where Yukari states she would feign illness to avoid attending Yuu's hypothetical wedding, unable to meet Yuu's exacting standards. Despite this, Yuu believes she and her mother have a good relationship, leading her to question the source of her perceived perfectionism.
Yuu describes her outward persona: disciplined in her habits, dedicated to her work, and possessing a fulfilling life with many friends. However, she clarifies that she doesn't impose these standards on others, only answering questions about them by first inquiring about their lifestyle. She realizes her direct, almost demanding approach to such questions, implying that a certain level of self-discipline is a prerequisite for discussing beauty, might be what others perceive as perfectionism and what causes her mother distress.
The narrative then shifts to Yuu attending a university friend's wedding. This event reignites her desire to marry and have a partner, but more immediately, her strong wish to have a wedding ceremony herself. She observes the happy couple and their supportive families, particularly the bride's heartfelt letter to her mother, which evokes a sense of love and connection. This contrasts sharply with her mother's aversion to attending her wedding, making Yuu feel a lack of love from Yukari.
Driven to understand, Yuu directly asks her mother why she wouldn't want to attend her wedding, even a simple one. Yukari's cryptic response is that she lacks "dignity," and that Yuu possesses it, implying Yuu's self-confidence makes her appear condescending. Yukari retreats to her room, leaving Yuu frustrated and unable to resolve the issue. Yuu grapples with the idea that her mother might be ashamed of her, or that her own actions are causing this shame. She desperately wants to understand and wants her mother to be proud of her.
Yuu attempts another approach by mentioning a desire for a destination wedding in Hawaii. Yukari expresses enthusiasm for overseas weddings, suggesting that friends might not come but family would. Yuu then directly asks if her mother would attend her wedding, even an overseas one. Yukari unequivocally refuses, stating she will not attend. This rejection deeply saddens Yuu, who feels she has unknowingly hurt her mother. She questions what "dignity" means and suspects her own self-improvement efforts, stemming from a perceived lack of beauty compared to her older sister, might be the cause. She realizes her desire for a wedding might have been driven by a wish to boast about her mother, and in turn, about herself as a daughter with such a mother. This realization leads her to consider that perhaps the simplest solution is not to have a wedding at all.
