The narrative begins in a peaceful, golden wheat field, ripe for harvest, yet devoid of villagers. This village's prosperity hinges on its wheat, processed into flour and sold to merchants. Suddenly, the tranquility is shattered by the sounds of battle. A female knight, Zenobia, fiercely battles a horde of Orcs, her anger fueled by their monstrous appearance. She is aided by a androgynous girl named Yuria, who urges Zenobia to maintain formation so their companion, Falsa, a mage in black robes, can unleash a devastating fire spell. Yuria and Zenobia, exhausted, rely on Falsa to finish the fight. Falsa conjures a "Firestorm," incinerating the Orcs. A girl in clerical attire, Palmina, a saint, then heals Zenobia and Yuria's wounds with restorative magic.
Falsa humbly attributes their success to Palmina's barrier magic and Yuria and Zenobia's ability to draw the Orcs' attention. Yuria and Zenobia praise Falsa's exceptional magical talent, noting his high reputation even at the royal palace. Falsa, uncomfortable with the praise, shifts the conversation to the village's harvest, which their intervention has now made possible. Yuria playfully suggests they be rewarded with freshly baked bread. The group, having stumbled upon the village in need, readily agreed to help. Zenobia playfully scolds Yuria for her boastfulness, while Yuria, in turn, playfully seeks comfort from Palmina. Falsa, ever the pragmatist, urges them to report to the village chief.
As they walk, Yuria attempts to persuade Falsa to let her stay in his room, which Zenobia vehemently opposes, blushing. Yuria clarifies she only wants to observe Falsa's magic training, further flustering Zenobia. Palmina observes with a smile, while Falsa sighs. Falsa gently rebukes Yuria, explaining his training is secret and that such suggestions are inappropriate. Palmina and Zenobia then express a desire for Falsa to be their older brother, leading to a humorous exchange where Falsa jokingly laments the prospect of having three younger sisters. They arrive at the village chief's house, where Falsa reports the Orcs' successful annihilation. The chief expresses immense gratitude, as the Orcs had severely hampered the harvest. Falsa requests the villagers' help in disposing of the Orc corpses to prevent them from reanimating. The chief readily agrees, organizing the villagers for the task. Falsa, feigning weakness, explains his party is mostly female and he is not physically strong, a tactic that has historically garnered cooperation from the villagers. He then requests freshly baked bread, cheese, and milk for the party, citing Yuria's growth as a hero. The chief, amused, agrees to arrange a lavish meal.
The next day, the group enjoys a significantly improved meal at the inn. Yuria devours her food, much to Zenobia's chagrin, who insists on proper etiquette. Palmina watches them with amusement. Yuria then questions Falsa's early retreat to his room. Zenobia and Palmina also express curiosity about Falsa's unusual behavior. Palmina jokingly suggests they peek into his room, which Yuria and Zenobia enthusiastically agree to. They head to Falsa's room, only to find him absent.
Meanwhile, Falsa, revealed to be Mirage, one of the Demon King's Four Heavenly Kings, is in his chambers at the Demon King's castle. He communicates with Tarte, a subordinate, via a communication crystal, expressing annoyance at a sudden summons. Tarte insists it's a direct order from the Demon King and criticizes Mirage for his tardiness and his subordinate, Mirage's, lack of communication. Mirage, resigned, agrees to go to the Demon King's castle. He dons a mask and a dark cloak, concealing his true appearance. He accesses a spatial rift to retrieve a large scythe and cloak. He laments his current situation, having joined the Demon King's army for financial reasons and now holding a high-ranking position he never desired. He then uses a larger spatial rift to travel to the Demon King's castle. Immediately after Mirage departs, Yuria, Zenobia, and Palmina burst into his room, finding it empty.
Mirage arrives at the Demon King's castle and inquires about the Demon King's whereabouts. He is directed to the Demon King's chambers. At the entrance, a new guard stops him, demanding he remove his mask. Mirage calmly explains he has permission from the Demon King. The guard refuses, but a senior guard arrives and reprimands the rookie, recognizing Mirage as one of the Four Heavenly Kings. The rookie guard, terrified, apologizes profusely. Mirage, understanding the situation, dismisses it. He enters the Demon King's chambers and, with a formal address, awaits the Demon King. The Demon King, revealed to be a beautiful woman, emerges and playfully chastises Mirage for his tardiness.
The Demon King explains a rebellion by some demons in the west who have fortified a stronghold. She tasks Mirage with using his teleportation magic to infiltrate the stronghold and deploy troops, as other Heavenly Kings would likely destroy the fortress. Mirage recommends his subordinate, Tarte, for the mission, but the Demon King insists on Mirage's unique abilities. Mirage reluctantly agrees, lamenting the increased workload. He is informed that troops are already waiting at the training grounds.
Mirage completes the troop deployment, feeling exhausted from the repeated use of mana potions to simulate a slower recovery. He returns to his castle and is met by Tarte, who sarcastically notes his late return. Tarte points out that as a manager, Mirage is exempt from standard working hours, a fact he was unaware of. Mirage apologizes for his ignorance and offers to help with paperwork. Tarte, however, assigns him tasks that are actually his responsibility. Mirage, despite his laziness, begins working.
Later, Mirage and Tarte are in Mirage's chambers. Tarte is meticulously examining Mirage's body, which Mirage finds embarrassing. Tarte explains it's necessary for her illusion magic, which she uses to cover for Mirage's absences. Mirage gives Tarte a gift, a sweet treat purchased during their journey. Tarte criticizes his methods but accepts the gift. A messenger arrives with a communication from the Demon King. Tarte uses illusion magic to make the messenger believe he is interacting with Mirage and Tarte, who are not physically present. Mirage is impressed by Tarte's advanced illusion magic, which now incorporates touch. He acknowledges her talent and suggests she could replace him as a Heavenly King. Tarte dismisses the idea, threatening to behead him if she ever takes his place. She then informs him they are summoned by the Demon King and leaves to prepare.
Mirage joins Tarte in the Demon King's chambers. They are greeted by a guard, a friend of Mirage's, and the rookie guard from before, who apologizes for his previous rudeness. They enter the Demon King's chambers, where the Demon King reveals the true nature of her summons.
The narrative then shifts back to the village. Zenobia scolds Yuria and Falsa for sleeping in the same bed. Palmina, however, seems pleased. Yuria pleads for forgiveness, and Falsa argues that they need to prepare for the Orc corpse disposal. Zenobia reluctantly relents, forbidding future similar incidents. Yuria asks Palmina for healing, but Palmina simply strokes her head, which Yuria finds surprisingly effective. Falsa exaggerates his pain from being punished, prompting an apology from Zenobia. Falsa then suggests he and Palmina guard the villagers while Zenobia and Yuria handle the perimeter patrol. This arrangement is accepted.
The villagers begin burying the Orc corpses. Falsa expresses admiration for their diligence, attributing it to the village chief's leadership. Palmina, a priestess of Fortuna, praises the chief and explains her own abilities in divine magic. She notes that the village's resilience against the Orcs was due to their unity and resourcefulness. Falsa expresses a desire to live in such a peaceful village, which Palmina finds amusing. They discuss Falsa's position as a top court mage and the demands of his job. Palmina reassures him that his importance is a testament to his value. Falsa teases Palmina, who playfully threatens to tell Yuria.
Later, in the Demon King's castle, Mirage and Tarte are in Mirage's chambers. Tarte continues her examination of Mirage's body, which he finds uncomfortable. Tarte insists it's necessary for her illusion magic. Mirage gives her a gift, a sweet treat he bought for her. Tarte criticizes his methods but accepts the gift. A messenger arrives with a summons from the Demon King. Tarte uses illusion magic to make the messenger believe he is interacting with Mirage and Tarte, who are not physically present. Mirage is impressed by Tarte's advanced illusion magic. Tarte explains her progress is due to practicing on Mirage's illusions. Mirage, impressed by her talent, suggests she could replace him as a Heavenly King. Tarte dismisses the idea, threatening to behead him if she ever takes his place. She then informs him they are summoned by the Demon King and leaves to prepare.
