The protagonist, Haruka, a young woman in her early twenties, finds her life irrevocably altered when she is accidentally summoned by an elderly mage named Glyme while exploring teleportation magic in her previous world. Unable to return home, she becomes Glyme's disciple, dedicating herself to the study of magic. Haruka excels in her studies, becoming a capable mage, but her master, Glyme, who neglected his own lifespan, eventually passes away. Haruka then isolates herself, living alone in a forest outside a village.
Her solitude is interrupted by a military summons. Due to a worsening war, she is ordered to serve as a special professional on the battlefield. Initially, the order was for her master, but upon his death, it fell to her. Feeling apprehensive about her female identity in such a setting, Haruka uses magic to disguise herself as a young man with brown hair and eyes, adopting a less conspicuous appearance. She finds herself thrust into a world of swords, armor, and magic, a stark contrast to her peaceful past as a high school student. The battlefield is a grim reality, marked by death and decay. Haruka is assigned to a support unit, which offers a lower mortality rate than frontline combat roles.
The war between her country, Roraites, and Heliot, sparked by a dispute over wheat, has reached a stalemate. Heliot forces have managed to bypass the difficult terrain of the forest separating the two nations and are pressing their attack. Haruka, along with other mages, participates in coordinated attacks using basic offensive and defensive spells. Magic is taught from master to disciple, lacking formal schooling, which necessitates synchronized use of simpler spells in group combat.
The war drags on, leading to mental strain and reckless use of magic by some. Haruka conserves her magic, but the constant tension and the need for vigilance, including night watches, wear on her. Suddenly, a deafening roar signals an enemy attack from within the southern gate, originating from a newly created underground tunnel. This breach bypasses the fort's defenses, throwing the defenders into chaos. Despite having conserved magic, the mages are overwhelmed by the close-quarters combat. Haruka witnesses her comrades fall and, facing imminent death, recalls her master's teachings about the power of imagination in magic.
In a desperate act, Haruka imagines her magic as fine, flammable particles dispersing and igniting them with a small electrical discharge, creating a massive explosion. This "dust explosion" devastates the enemy forces, filling the tunnel with rubble and killing many. Haruka survives by creating an air barrier, though she sustains injuries. She then dedicates herself to healing the wounded, using her magic to mend broken bones, stop bleeding, and regenerate tissue. This intensive healing drains her magic reserves to critical levels, leaving her exhausted.
Among the wounded she treats is a young man of higher rank, who initially refuses her help, resigned to death. Haruka, fueled by frustration at her situation and his apparent lack of will to live, chastises him, calling him a "loser." She challenges him to a bet: if she dies, he can commit suicide; if she lives, he must live for her. This unexpected outburst sparks a flicker of life in his eyes. Haruka then uses her remaining magic to heal him, collapsing from exhaustion afterward. The young man, identified as Basker Marg, a soldier from the Blue Heron Division, later visits Haruka in the hospital to express his gratitude, revealing that she saved his life. He pledges his lifelong service to her.
Haruka's recovery is slow, and she is informed that her magic-channeling pores are damaged, potentially permanently affecting her magical abilities. She is assured that her medical expenses will be covered by the country. While recovering, she receives visits from other soldiers she saved, including Ricardo Meltzers Bramdi, the third son of a Count and a knight. Ricardo reveals that Haruka's outburst during the battle inspired him, and he believes she possesses a great destiny. He uses a forbidden ritual, biting her hand and consuming her blood, to bind himself to her as a servant, despite her protests. He insists on serving her, even offering his wealth and resources.
Haruka, still recovering and unable to move freely, is taken to Ricardo's opulent estate outside the capital. She struggles to adapt to this new life, feeling out of place and overwhelmed by the luxury. She begins physical therapy and studies magic books, aiming to regain her strength and magical abilities. Ricardo remains devoted, ensuring her comfort and care, though Haruka remains wary of his intense devotion and the implications of his binding ritual. She learns from a maid that Ricardo was once reclusive and emotionally distant, suggesting a significant change in his personality after their encounter.
As Haruka's physical condition improves, she expresses a desire to visit the town, but her attendant, Alf, refuses, citing safety concerns due to increased crime and unrest following the war. Haruka, feeling underestimated and confident in her magical abilities, decides to go to town on her own. She leaves a note for Alf and heads out, but upon arriving at Ricardo's room, she finds it empty. A note reveals that Ricardo has left, implying he is pursuing his own agenda. Haruka, now more determined than ever to understand Ricardo's motives and her own future, resolves to navigate this new, complex world.
