The narrative picks up with Barad, a 40-year-old merchant and former companion of the Hero, enjoying a soak in a hot spring. He is interrupted by the sudden, boisterous arrival of Verukto, the Hero, who crashes into the bath. Verukto, who appears to be in her late teens but is officially over twenty, is described as incredibly beautiful with pink hair and red-brown eyes. Despite her growth in strength over the past five years since Barad left her party, her personality remains endearingly chaotic and childlike. Barad, using his silver prosthetic arm, helps her manage her long pink hair, noting a persistent thin scar on her neck. Verukto explains she came because Barad summoned her, but he clarifies he only asked her to come once a new sword was ready, not to dive into his bath. She expresses her eagerness to see him, revealing a charmingly oblivious yet astute nature. The other party members are expected to arrive later, as Verukto tends to rush ahead.
Barad and Verukto then head to "Gimugaki Yokocho," a bustling food stall district in the city of Maira, a crucial logistics hub on the border between human and demon territories, recently liberated by Verukto's party. Barad, dressed in a business suit, is accompanied by Verukto, who is disguised in a skirt, though her large bag of gear and distinctive hair still draw attention. Verukto is delighted by the lively atmosphere, and Barad indulges her, allowing her to eat whatever she wishes. They settle at a yakiniku restaurant, where Verukto is amazed by the concept of eating raw, chilled meat preserved in Barad's company's ice-storage facility, which utilizes ice magic circuits.
Their meal is interrupted by the arrival of Tasha, a striking woman in her late twenties, the Saintess of the world religion Matial, and a member of Verukto's party. Beside her is Izuma, a masked swordsman recently joined to the party, who is revealed to be a former demon general of moderate views. Verukto enthusiastically greets them, and Tasha playfully admonishes Verukto before turning to Barad. They exchange pleasantries, with Tasha noting Barad's successful business. Barad inquires about the other party members: Meishin, the second prince of the human allied kingdom of Aleista and a magic knight, and Asura, a spy brought by Meishin. They are currently at the Aleista embassy. Barad then formally greets Izuma, who, despite his imposing appearance, has a surprisingly delicate hand. Tasha joins them for drinks and food, and Verukto, after eating her fill, falls asleep at the table.
Barad pays the bill, and with Izuma carrying Verukto's gear, they walk to their lodging. They discuss Barad's company, which supports the Hero's party and the human allied forces through logistics and reconstruction efforts. Upon arriving at their inn, they encounter Asura, a haughty noble and head of the Yaksha family, one of the seven spy families serving the Aleista royal family. Asura expresses disdain for Barad's association with the Hero, deeming him a lowly merchant. Tasha dismisses his rudeness, and Barad ignores it. They proceed to their rooms, with Barad feeling Asura's animosity.
The next day, Barad meets with Verukto's party at his company's Maira branch to deliver a new weapon: the "Orichalcum Adamantium Alloy Fifth Generation Forged Sword, Weiss Lexima." This massive greatsword, weighing fifty pounds and equipped with eight Bozen-type large magic circuits, is the culmination of Barad's efforts to develop superior weaponry after Verukto's previous sword, Horus Ray, was broken. Barad recounts his decade-long history with Verukto, starting from the destruction of her homeland, Rhodes. He became her manager, helping her navigate the complexities of being a hero and avoiding exploitation. However, as Verukto's fame grew, Barad felt his role diminish. Five years prior, Verukto suffered a devastating defeat where three party members were killed and Barad lost an arm. This led to his departure from the party, as Meishin, the second prince of Aleista, deemed him a liability. Barad then established the Matial Chartered Company, a military-economic organization focused on supplying the human forces and aiding reconstruction.
The delivery of Weiss Lexima is met with awe by Verukto, who can effortlessly wield the incredibly heavy sword. Asura, however, objects, asserting that Aleista's treasure sword, Agathos Daimon, is the only suitable weapon for the Hero. Tasha counters that Agathos Daimon is ineffective against the Demon Lord Gares, and that a short sword made by Barad's company was what defeated the demon general Degis. Meishin, while acknowledging Asura's point about national pride, ultimately agrees that a superior weapon should be used, but proposes that Weiss Lexima be designated as a reserve weapon to maintain appearances. Barad accepts this compromise, prioritizing Verukto's success over the sword's prestige.
The narrative then flashes back to Verukto's origins. She has no memory of her past, awakening in a burning castle in Rhodes, attacked by demon forces. Driven by an innate sense of duty, she single-handedly defeats the demon commander Mekira and takes his sword, from which she derives her name. Barad, a merchant whose shop was destroyed, recognizes her potential and joins her, teaching her about the importance of compensation for her efforts and how to manage her finances. Their journey together evolves as Verukto gains renown, eventually receiving the title of Hero from Aleista. Barad, feeling out of place among her more distinguished companions, eventually leaves the party after Verukto's near-fatal defeat.
The story then details the formation of the original Hero's party, including Meishin, the shapeshifter Kagura, the dragon knight Lavanus, and the young mage Falem. Barad, despite his merchant status, was valued for his skills. After a year, Saintess Tasha joined, and a year later, the party was ambushed by Degis. Lavanus and Falem were killed, Barad lost an arm, and Kagura sacrificed herself by impersonating Verukto. Meishin then proposed Barad's departure, which Verukto, unable to protect her companions, reluctantly accepted.
Barad's subsequent establishment of the Matial Chartered Company, a powerful economic force, significantly aided the human forces. The development of Orichalcum-Adamantium alloy weapons, including Verukto's short sword Soma Lexima and later the greatsword Weiss Lexima, proved crucial in turning the tide of the war. The narrative then shifts to the final battle against the Demon Lord Gares. Verukto, wielding Weiss Lexima, defeats Gares, but is struck by a curse. Tasha and Izuma are also gravely wounded. Meishin then betrays Verukto, stabbing her, while Asura incapacitates her. Tasha and Izuma are also attacked. Meishin reveals his motive: Verukto, as a "blade" that has served its purpose, must be sheathed or eliminated. He had offered her marriage to integrate her into Aleista's power structure, but she refused.
Barad learns of Verukto's death and suspects foul play. He and the wise mage Bozen investigate the site of the final battle. They discover Tasha alive, having survived in a subterranean chamber. Izuma is also found, severely injured. Bozen deduces that Verukto might have been a golem, explaining her unusual characteristics and the fact her body has not decayed. They plan to infiltrate Verukto's state funeral in Aleista to recover her body and investigate the truth. Meanwhile, Asura is captured and tortured by Tasha, revealing that Meishin ordered him to cut a specific magic rune on Verukto's neck, which caused her death. Asura also confesses to sexually abusing his sister Kagura, fueling Tasha's rage. The narrative concludes with Barad and his allies preparing to confront Meishin and Asura, with the possibility of Verukto's resurrection being explored.
